What is going to win Best Picture at the Oscars this year?
Emilia Pérez led all films with 13 nominations (a record for a film not in the English language), and The Brutalist and Wicked received 10 bids each. But the Oscar experts on Gold Derby expect Anora to win Best Picture this year in a tight race over Conclave. Sean Baker's film received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Baker, Best Original Screenplay for Baker, Best Editing for Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, and Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov. Since the Oscar nominations were announced in January, Anora has asserted itself with the industry. The Neon release won Best Picture at the Producers Guild Awards, Best Original Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards, and Best Director for Baker at the Directors Guild Awards. Anora also won Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards, a non-industry event. At the BAFTA Awards, Anora won two honors: Best Actress for Madison and Best Casting for Baker. In the last 25 years, only three films (Brokeback Mountain, La La Land, and 1917) have been the sole winners of the PGA and DGA Awards and then failed to win Best Picture at the Oscars. (A fourth film, Gravity, tied with 12 Years a Slave at the PGA Awards and won at the DGA Awards for Alfonso Cuarón; 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture at the Oscars, however.) However, Conclave looms large as a precedent-breaking upset pick. The Edward Berger movie won Best Film at the BAFTA Awards and Best Ensemble over Anora at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. No movie has ever won Best Picture with those honors but without guild wins from the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.
Who is hosting the Oscars this year?
Former late-night host and comic Conan O’Brien hosts this year’s Oscars ceremony. “We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy Presiden Janet Yang said in a statement last year while announcing O’Brien as host. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best — honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”
“America demanded it, and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars,” O’Brien said last year in his typical self-deprecating fashion.
Speaking to the press before the Oscars in late February, O'Brien said he had talked to former Oscar hosts Billy Crystal and Jimmy Kimmel about his emcee duties, but would not commit to sharing secrets about his plans for the show.
"I can neither confirm nor deny anything that's happening anywhere in the show, mostly because I don't know what's going on. I don't come to rehearsal. I hang out in a Cheesecake Factory, which is on Vine and Highland," he joked. "The whole trick here in this business is to get people to watch to see what's going to happen. See this is the mistake I used to make. I used to tell people exactly what I was going to do long before I did it and no one tuned in. Then I learned, don't tell people what you're going to do. A magician taught me that."
Who are this year's Oscar presenters?
Great news for fans of last year's Oscar winners. On Feb. 5, the Academy and ABC announced that last year's acting winners — Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Emma Stone — will return to the Oscars stage this year as presenters.
On Feb. 11, more Oscar presenters were revealed, including Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Elle Fanning, Whoopi Goldberg, Scarlett Johansson, John Lithgow, Amy Poehler, June Squibb, and Bowen Yang.
On Feb. 19, additional Oscar presenters were added. Those names include Joe Alwyn, Sterling K. Brown, Willem Dafoe, Ana de Armas, Lily-Rose Depp, Selena Gomez, Goldie Hawn, Connie Nielsen, Ben Stiller, and Oprah Winfrey.
On Feb. 26, another round of Oscar presenters were announced. Those names include Dave Bautista, Harrison Ford, Gal Gadot, Andrew Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Margaret Qualley, Alba Rohrwacher, Zoe Salda?a, and Rachel Zegler.
On Feb. 28, Miley Cyrus and Miles Teller were added.
Who is the Oscars announcer this year?
Former Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman has been selected as the 2025 Oscars announcer.
What singers will perform during the Oscars this year?
While the Best Song presentation will be different this year -- the nominees will not be performed during the ceremony -- the Oscars will still feature significant music contributions from recording stars Doja Cat, LISA of Blackpink, Queen Latifah, and RAYE, who "will participate in showstopping performances celebrating the filmmaking community and some of its legends at the 97th Oscars," it was revealed on Feb. 24. Oscar nominees and Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will also participate the music plans. However, whether the actresses perform selections from their Best Picture nominee is unknown. It was also reported by Variety that the Oscars will include a tribute to James Bond and the franchise's long history of theme songs (many of which won Oscars).
When does the Oscars red carpet start?
While the Oscars red carpet will likely open at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT (as happened last year) with coverage airing on the E! network, the official Oscars red carpet show starts at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT and airs live on ABC while also streaming on Hulu. This year, the official Oscars red carpet hosts are Julianne Hough and Jesse Palmer. According to ABC, "The 30-minute special will highlight Oscar nominees, performers and presenters, and provide a multiview experience of the red-carpet arrivals, giving the audience every can’t-miss moment from Hollywood’s biggest celebration."
How did the Los Angeles wildfires impact the Oscars this year?
Due to the wildfires, the Academy delayed the Oscar nominations announcement by six days, from Friday, Jan. 17, to Thursday, Jan. 23. The Academy also extended the voting window by several days to allow those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires additional time to cast their ballots.
The Academy also canceled or delayed several events, including the Oscar nominees luncheon (initially set for Monday, Feb. 10, and now canceled), and the Scientific and Technical Awards (initally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, and now indefinitely delayed).
The Oscars ceremony, however, did not move off its Sunday, March 2 date.
The Academy has also donated at least $1 million to the Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF) to help Los Angeles residents impacted by the wildfires.
"After continued consultation with ABC, our board, and other key stakeholders in the Los Angeles and film communities, planning continues for the 97th Oscars ceremony on Sunday, March 2," Academy bosses Bill Kramer and Janet Yang said in a statement on Jan. 22. "This year’s Oscars will celebrate the work that unites us as a global film community and acknowledge those who fought so bravely against the wildfires."
Speaking to the press, producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor said the show would feature a tribute to first responders.
"There have been so many people that have been touched by this devastation," Kapoor said. "There's been so much outreach. And we really wanted to create some really beautiful moments onstage that celebrate this amazing city that we live in, all the amazing films that have been shot here, and just have a really uplifting and beautiful message." He added that there will be a charitable element tying into the rebuilding efforts after the devastating area wildfires that destroyed so many homes and lives in January.
Will the Oscars still happen this year?
Yes. The 2025 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement on Jan. 15 that despite rumors that the 2025 Oscars would be canceled or delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the show will go on as planned and include a tribute to responders.
“After consultation with ABC, our board, and other key stakeholders in the Los Angeles and film communities, we have made the carefully considered decision to proceed with the 97th Oscars ceremony as planned on March 2,” Kramer said. “This year’s ceremony will include special moments acknowledging those who fought so bravely against the wildfires. We feel that we must go forward to support our film community and to use our global platform to bring attention to these critical moments in our history. The spirit of Los Angeles and our film community has always been one of resilience, and the Oscars represent not just a celebration of film, but the industry’s strength and unity in the face of adversity.”
