Warner Bros To Remake ‘Who Am I’; Pic Is German Box Office Sensation

: Warner Bros has closed a deal to remake Who Am I, the latest film by German-based helmer Baran “Bo” Odar, who made his directorial debut on The Silence. Who Am I, which premiered in Toronto, is a visual thriller that stars Tom Schilling as a young man who gets pulled into the world of an Anonymous-like hacking group. Pic starts with him telling his story to Europol investigator after he and his cohorts perpetrated a crime spree that pissed off the Russian mob, which butchered up three of the hackers in a hotel room.
The film is playing gangbusters in Germany, where in its fourth week it has earned the equivalent of $11 million on a budget of $4 million euros. It has been doing business there that is comparable to Gone Girl and Dracula Untold.
Kevin McCormick will produce the remake through his Langley Park banner. WB’s Jesse Ehrman and Nik Mavinkurve will oversee.
The deal came about in an unexpected way: UTA, which reps Odar, brought him to the studios to seek out other films for him to direct. When those studios watched the movie, they became as excited about the remake prospects as about putting Odar on other movies — the latter of which is expected to happen quickly.
Odar wrote the movie and UTA repped him and the German producers Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann and Justyna Muesch.
