'The Voice' slashes its 17 contestants down to 9. See who got eliminated, who won wild card

Spoiler alert: This story contains details from the May 5 episode of NBC's "The Voice."

"Voice" host Carson Daly crossed his fingers as the singing competition narrowed its challengers from 17 to 9 in its first live and remote elimination show.

The judges appeared via video from their quarantine safe havens. Kelly Clarkson tuned in from Montana, where she weighed in with a sizable glass of red wine that Daly predicted would be trending on Twitter. Blake Shelton broadcast from Oklahoma and John Legend and Nick Jonas appeared from Los Angeles.

Here's how the eliminations went down: From each team, the artist with the highest viewer vote total after Monday's performance show got the green light. Then, each coach was able to pick another singer to save.

Out of those left, the singers from each team with the most votes competed live for the wild card spot. After their performances, viewers were able to vote during the live show to save one person in peril.

Team Blake

Todd Tilghman received the most votes, leaving Joanna Serenko, Joei Fulco and Toneisha Harris in jeopardy. Shelton, "so proud" of all of his remaining artists, chose to save Harris, who expressed her thanks to her coach. Serenko beat out Fulco and went on to compete for the wild card spot.

Team Legend

Hopefuls CammWess, Mandi Castillo, Mike Jerel and Zan Fiskum nervously waited for Daly to announce the safe participant. Viewers chose to keep CammWess in the competition. After pondering the difficult decision, Legend bet on Fiskum to leave her mark. "I believe in this person's artistry the most, and I believe this person has a great chance to go far in this competition," he said of his decision. Tuesday marked the end of the road for Jerel, who received fewer votes than Castillo.

Team Kelly

Cedrice, Mandi Thomas, Megan Danielle and Micah Iverson were all hoping to continue to represent Clarkson's squad. Daly announced Iverson would be sticking around, leaving Clarkson with a heavy heart knowing the choice that lay ahead of her. "We all feel like a jerk," she said of being in the coach position, reminding her team members that just because she didn't pick someone doesn't mean their professional relationship is over. Clarkson kept Danielle. With a lack of votes, Thomas was eliminated and Cedrice went on to perform for a piece of the Top 9.

Team Nick

Jonas had the most to lose Tuesday, as he was the only coach with five remaining artists: Allegra Miles, Arei Moon, Michael Williams, Roderick Chambers and Thunderstorm Artis. Thunderstorm, who received the most votes, will continue to power through the competition. Though Jonas was "so sad" to "have to make this really tough choice," the coach went with Miles. Williams moved on to fight for the wild card spot.

Wild card sing-off

Serenko showed out for Team Blake, singing "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" by this season's Mega Mentor, James Taylor. Shelton pleaded with viewers to keep Serenko's hopes alive. "America, please do the right thing!" he begged. "Put Joanna through!"

Castillo selected to showcase her voice with Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," impressing her coach. "It was perfectly executed," Legend gushed. "Such a gorgeous performance."

Following Cedrice's rendition of Ariana Grande's "breathin," Clarkson raved over her "star" team member. "You have such a cool tone in your voice," she said. "I cannot wait to buy your record one day. You are bigger than this moment, remember that, no matter what happens."

Williams, from Team Nick, hoped his performance of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" would be enough to garner the votes to put him through. And according to Jonas, it was. "You deserve to be in that Top 9," the coach said.

When the live voting was done, it was announced that Shelton's Serenko would be the final addition to the Top 9.

"The Voice" at-home quarantine competition continues Monday on NBC at 8 EDT/PDT.
