‘The Voice’ Recap: Cee Lo Says It ‘Hurt’ to Cut Tony Vincent
Adam Levine made an astute comment toward the end of Tuesday’s elimination edition of “The Voice,” interrupting his fellow judges just as Cee Lo Green was about to decide which singer he would choose to allow to continue. “Why did it take this long for you to sing like this,” he asked of Tony Vincent, Cheesa and Erin Martin, chastising them for holding back on delivering emotionally resonant performances.

He was spot on. This week’s edition of “sing for your supper” was far more intense than the first round a week ago, when the bottom three of Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera sang in the hopes of getting their coach to save them. To some degree it owes to the singers watching four singers get cut, but this week’s eliminated singers all said it owed to them being allowed to sing a tune of their choosing.
America, whose votes determined three of the singers going forward, voted in Mathai, Tony Lucca and Pip for Levine; Juliet Simms, Jamar Rogers and James Massone for Green. Levine chose Katrina Parker after her rendition of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” wowed the three other judges and Green went with her heart and picked Cheesa, who sang Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” as if it were the centerpiece of “Dreamgirls,” to stay in the fold. His head, Green explained, told him to go with theatrical rocker Tony Vincent.

Vincent, Martin, Karla Davis and Kim Yarbrough were all sent packing — for a trip to New York to appear on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” tonight (Wednesday).
“Cee Lo wanted something I didn’t,” Martin said after the show, noting he was trying to place her in a Beyonce mold. “What he didn’t realize is I’m not Beyonce. I am Erin Martin. And you can’t change that, so…
I just want to be singing from behind a piano or a guitar.”
Vincent had a noticably higher opinion of Cee Lo’s efforts, telling us on the red carpet “there was a lot of camaraderie” between them. “We sort of have a similar viewpoint on what music should be, or what music can be. Sort of epic, and out of the box and challenging your listener. So, to be on that team and to be receiving that dialogue is, again, I was with the right coach from the beginning.”
For his part, Green told us that cutting Vincent was not easy for him. “To have to let someone as talented as Tony go, it really disappointed me tonight. It hurt me,” he said. “It hurt my feelings, and I know I hurt his feelings too. So I apologize to Tony. You know I love you.”
Monday, Maroon 5 will perform their first single, “Payphone,” with Wiz Khalifa. The track will appear on their fourth album “Overexposed.”
