'The View': All About Whoopi Goldberg's Family, Children And Grandchildren
Actor, comedian, producer, author and TV personality, Whoopi Goldberg has a monumental resume and a handful of accolades to her name-- and she also has a beautiful family. She’s an EGOT winner—making her the first Black woman to have been awarded all four of the major American entertainment awards. She’s also a 2001 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recipient and has an illustrious Hollywood career spanning over 30 years.
On top of all her entertainment success, the award-winning star is also a proud mother, loving grandmother, and doting great-grandmother. Goldberg married her first husband Alvin Martin, with whom she shares a daughter, in 1973. Her marriage to Martin lasted 6 years—making it her longest marriage. Following their split, the View star remarried twice. She married her second husband, David Claessen, in 1986, but the pair split up two years later in 1988. She was later wed to her third husband, Lyle Trachtenberg, from 1994 to 1995.
In a 2011 interview with Piers Morgan, Goldberg admitted to never really being in love with any of her husbands. In response to a question about relationships and her three marriages, Goldberg responded: "I suppose that you know, you have to actually be in love with the person that you marry. You have to really be committed to them. And I'm just—I don't have that commitment. I'm committed to my family, you know, and so, hence, for that relationship has lasted, you know, the longest."
Despite her those marriages, Goldberg's family consisting of her daughter, three grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
Alexandrea Martin
Alexandrea (Alex) Martin is Goldberg’s first and only child from her first marriage to Alvin Martin. Both Alex and her mother share a love for acting, as Alex has a handful of acting credits to her name. Alex started acting in the 1990s and became known for movies such as “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, “Quest of the Delta Knights”, “American Intellectuals”, “Call Me Claus” and “Strange As Angels”. In addition to acting, Alex also has some producing credits.
In 2015, Alex’s BET reality series, According to Alex, launched. The series, which only had one season, revolved around Alex and her family. Since then Alex has made guest appearances on several TV series including Good Morning America, The Wendy Williams Show, The Chew, Rebel Hearts w/ Kristie Reeves, and has also been a co-host on her mother’s talk show The View.
Alex has been married thrice and divorced twice to the same man, Bernard Dean. The couple remarried in 2011 and have two kids together: Jerzey and Mason. Alex also has a daughter from her previous relationship named Amarah Skye.
Amarah Skye Dean
Whoopi Goldberg’s first grandchild, Amarah, was born in 1989. Goldberg’s daughter, Alex Martin, had Amarah at the young age of 16. There’s little known about Amarah’s biological father, but some reports say he was Alex’s high school fling.
Amarah tends to live her life outside the public eye, but it is known that she’s a wife and mother to a little girl named Charli Rose. Charli made Goldberg a great-grandmother at the age of 58. Whoopi introduced the newest addition to the family in a 2014 Instagram video after she was born.
“Everyone meet the new addition to my family Charli Rose and yea I’m a tad awkward it took me a minute been a LONG time! #thankGod4newlife!” Goldberg gushed in her post.
Jerzey Dean
Goldberg’s second granddaughter was born in 1998. Jerzey is the biological daughter of Alex and Bernard Dean. Jerzey is a fashionista and is heavily involved in fashion and design. She’s the owner of Jerzey Kennedy Designs, a fashion brand based in Los Angeles and New York City. Her budding fashion label seems to specialize in loungewear primarily.
Mason Dean
Goldberg’s only grandson is Mason Dean. Mason was born in 1998. Although he comes from a family of actors, Mason appears to be more interested in the musical world. By the looks of his Instagram, Mason is a budding rapper and musician. He released a single called “Focus” in 2020, and he also has tunes available for streaming on Spotify and other platforms.
