Veteran Visual Effects Exec Scott Coulter Joins MASTERSFX
WorldwideFX founder Scott Coulter has been named Vice President and Executive Producer Of Visual Effects for MASTERFX. Coulter is overseeing day-to-day operations on visual effects in the company’s L.A. headquarters, heading up character and creature design for its current slate of products.
Founded in 1987, MASTERSFX focuses on a blend of practical and digital effects the company has dubbed “dMFX.” Examples of the company’s work can be seen on Hemlock Grove, The Flash, Arrow, iZombie, and Falling Skies. The company is also working on a new Underworld movie, a tv pilot, and a soon-to-be-announced feature film from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. The company has studios in Vancouver, and Los Angeles. Among its film and tv credits are True Blood, Tales from the Crypt, Fringe, RoboCop, Star Trek: First Contact, and Snakes on a Plane. Company founder Todd Masters received a special effects makeup Emmy award in 2003 for Six Feet Under.
“The merging of Practical and Visual Effects is the future of visual design in media – and MASTERSFX is a world-class company, leading in this space,” Coulter told Deadline. “The blending of these disciplines is the greatest challenge moving forward, and this company is the place to perfect this blending and really make it happen.”
“The idea of working in LA again after many years based in Bulgaria also appealed to me,” Coulter said. Prior to MFX, Coulter served 14 years as VFX Executive Producer for WorldwideFX, headquartered in Bulgaria. Over that period, he oversaw that studio’s expansion to a second facility in Shreveport, Louisiana, and visual effects on over 140 films.
Coulter, who began his career as a production assistant for George Romero’s Creepshow, has worked on more than 200 films across multiple genres, including The Expendables, Conan the Barbarian, Dogma, My Favorite Martian, The Crow, and many others.
