Venom 3 Delayed to Late 2024 as SAG-AFTRA Strike Ends
The Tom Hardy-led Venom 3 has a new release date at Sony Pictures.
Per Variety, Sony has officially delayed Venom 3 from July 12, 2024 to November 8, 2024 — meaning the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) film will hit theaters exactly one year from today. This development follows the massive news that the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) has approved a tentative deal to bring its nearly four-month-long strike to a close.
Sony announced Venom 3’s initial July 2024 release date late this past July — a mere two weeks after the SAG-AFTRA strike began. At the same time, however, the studio delayed fellow SSU film Kraven the Hunter from October 6, 2023 to August 30, 2024. Moreover, Sony temporarily removed the upcoming animated feature Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse from its release calendar entirely. Notably, this was also during the thick of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, which ultimately ended in late September.
The Lethal Protector returns for a trilogy-capper in Venom 3
Hardy first portrayed Marvel Comics’ Eddie Brock in Sony’s 2018 film Venom. He subsequently reprised his role in the 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Hardy also made a mid-credits cameo as Eddy in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Mad Max: Fury Road star returns to the Marvel multiverse in the currently-untitled Venom 3. He is joined by Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor, both of whom have been cast in undisclosed roles. Ejiofor is certainly no stranger to Marvel adaptations, having already portrayed Karl Mordo in the MCU.
Venom and Let There Be Carnage writer Kelly Marcel returns to pen the script for the threequel from a story she developed with Hardy. The film also marks Marcel’s directorial debut. She takes over from director Andy Serkis, who helmed Let There Be Carnage. Venom 3 began shooting in Spain this past June. Production halted one month later due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Venom 3 opens in theaters on November 8, 2024.
