“The Umbrella Academy ”star“ ”Elliot Page loves the 'beautiful' friendship between Ben and Victor
“There's such a kindred spirit between the two characters," costar Justin H. Min says.

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy is bringing the friendship between two of the Hargreeves siblings "full circle."
Back in season 2, Victor Hargreeves (Elliot Page) is saved by the ghost of his dead brother, Ben (Justin H. Min), in the midst of his rampage from the effects of a CIA mind control experiment — a powerful moment Entertaiment Weekly witnessed on set. In season 4, it's Victor's turn to save Ben when his own power gets out of control.
“There's such a kindred spirit between the two characters, because in their own ways they’ve been forgotten and ostracized, and to have them be able to connect on that level is really powerful,” Min tells EW. “I felt this during those season 2 scenes as well, and to see that come full circle this season was amazing.”

After the season 2 climax, Ben came back to life in season 3 — but as a meaner, alternate version of himself who belonged to the Sparrow Academy rather than the Umbrella Academy. Some of that meanness is still present in season 4; Ben feels distant from the rest of the family, even when they all get their superpowers restored.
Some of the siblings are too busy with their own problems to pay much attention when Ben goes off on his own in search of a mysterious woman named Jennifer (Victoria Sawal). But Victor notices, and seeks out his brother. He gets there in time to find Ben as his tentacle powers are metastasizing to a dangerous level, just as Victor's sound-based powers once did. Ben once comforted Victor at a dark moment, and now Victor helps Ben keep himself under control just long enough for the Umbrella Academy to save the world one more time.

Ben has been ignored by most of his siblings (other than the medium Klaus) because he was dead for the first two seasons, a mystery that the show finally revealed in season 4. Meanwhile, Victor was also long ignored by his siblings, who thought he was powerless. After it was revealed that Victor is actually the most powerful of them all, the rest of the family has held him at a bit of arm’s length (although they did welcome his gender transition in season 3).
That last part really helps Victor understand what Ben is going through in season 4, as it becomes clear that Ben’s power is capable of causing an apocalypse. Having been an apocalyptic catalyst himself in the past, Victor refuses to allow Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) or anyone else to take the easy way out by killing Ben.
Min and Page were happy to share emotional scenes together again in the final season.
“Working with Justin is always such a joy, and these scenes we've had together that mirror each other have been two of my favorites that I've gotten to do in the whole show in terms of the emotional depth and the intensity,” Page says. “Obviously, in this world there’s all this spectacle going on, but it’s finding that emotion and connection that makes the show so special. Ben and Victor's connection in particular has been a real beautiful thing to explore throughout these seasons.”

Since The Umbrella Academy has such a big cast (the seven main siblings, plus various friends and enemies), the seasons have usually had to split them into smaller groups. Showrunner Steve Blackman says he especially sought to change up those dynamics in the final season, which gave viewers more time with Ben and Victor.
“On every season I've wanted to put them with other people so it doesn't feel too derivative,” Blackman says. “I also wanted to see Klaus and Allison together, which we really haven't done much before and they have such an interesting dynamic. My goal was to continually evolve the relationships.”
All four seasons of The Umbrella Academy are streaming now on Netflix.
