Tyler Perry Sets Multi-Year First Look Film Deal with Netflix

Tyler Perry is getting back into the Netflix business.

The director of the “Madea” franchise of movies and last year’s “A Jazzman’s Blues” for Netflix has formed a new creative partnership with the streamer. Perry will write, direct, and produce feature films over a multi-year, first-look film deal.

No word on if Perry would be starring in any of his projects, as there’s still an actors strike ongoing.

No specific projects were announced as part of the new first-look deal, but Perry upcoming has “Six Triple Eight,” which stars Kerry Washington and is a World War II film based on the true story of the first and only Women’s Army Corp unit of color stationed overseas. The project is an ensemble story that also boasts Susan Sarandon and Oprah Winfrey among its cast. He also has “Mea Culpa,” which stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes and is about a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.

Perry revived the Madea franchise for Netflix with “A Madea Homecoming,” his 12th film in the series, and the movie back in March 2022 debuted at No. 1 on the Netflix Top 10 list and scored 31.56 million viewing hours. He also directed “A Jazzman’s Blues,” a period melodrama and romance that premiered at TIFF in 2022, and 2020’s “A Fall From Grace.”

Next up for Perry is “Maxine’s Baby,” a documentary about the director’s life and career that has been in the making for nearly a decade and is co-directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz. That film will premiere at the upcoming AFI Film Festival and is already set to be distributed by Amazon Studios on November 17. Perry also has a four-film deal with Amazon that he set up last year.
