Timothée Chalamet’s First Full Bob Dylan Release Is Here
With Bob Dylan’s seal of approval in the bag and the release of A Complete Unknown just a few weeks away, Timothée Chalamet has shared his full version of two Dylan classics, “Girl From the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
Snippets of both songs, to be fair, have featured in previously released trailers for A Complete Unknown, but this is the first time the full recordings have been shared (they also follow Chalamet’s rendition of “Subterranean Homesick Blues”). Chalamet’s take on “Like a Rolling Stone,” is rather abridged (about half as long as Dylan’s original), but still captures that loose, sly, rambunctious energy.

And on “Girl From the North Country,” Chalamet is joined by his co-star Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez in the film. While Dylan famously recorded a version of this song with Johnny Cash, there’s no evidence Dylan and Baez ever sang it together. This was one of the loose fictionalizations A Complete Unknown director James Mangold embraced for his re-telling of this era of Dylan’s career.
“You can’t make it like a Wikipedia entry,” the filmmaker put it to Rolling Stone in a recent cover story about the film. (Hell, even Dylan was happy to play fast and loose with the facts. Edward Norton — who plays Pete Seeger — claimed that Dylan told Mangold he should include one completely inaccurate moment in the movie. When Mangold expressed concern about what people might think, Dylan reportedly replied, “What do you care what other people think?”)
In that cover story, Chalamet spoke about the preparations that went into playing Dylan, saying he worked with a vocal, dialect, and movement coaches, on top of learning to play guitar and harmonica. The versions of the songs that appear in the film were primarily recorded live on set.
“You can’t re-create it in the studio,” Chalamet said. “If I was singing to a prerecorded guitar, then all of a sudden I could hear the lack of an arm movement in my voice.”
A Complete Unknown is set to open Christmas Day.
