NBC’s Chicago Med is a medical drama following the personal and professional lives of doctors and nurses in the emergency department of the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Created by Dick Wolf, the series is the third spin-off in the One Chicago franchise, which also includes Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. It first premiered in 2015 and is currently on its 9th season.
Season 9 has been a season of transition for the hit show, as three original cast members exited in Season 8: Nick Gehlfuss (Dr. Will Halstead), Yaya DaCosta (April Sexton) and Brian Tee (Dr. Ethan Choi). A few new doctors were brought on this season as well, including Dr. Mitch Ripley (played by Luke Mitchell) and Dr. Zola Ahmad (played by Sophia Ali). The show has already been renewed for another season, but Season 10 will look a little different… again. Here’s everything to know about the latest Chicago Med shakeup.
Who is leaving Chicago Med in Season 9?
Who is leaving Chicago Med? Following Season 9, longtime showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider will be exiting the series. The pair have been at the helm since Chicago Med first debuted in 2015 and they were instrumental in the show’s success. Along with original cast members S. Epatha Merkerson (as Dr. Sharon Goodwin), Oliver Platt (as Dr. Daniel Charles) and Marlyne Barrett (as Dr. Maggie Lockwood), Frolov and Schneider had remained constant through the show’s various personnel changes.
“We were honored to be chosen by Dick Wolf to run Chicago Med and have tremendously enjoyed our association with Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television. We love Chicago Med and have devoted all our creative energies to it, but after nine seasons we feel it’s time for us to move on and explore other possibilities,” Frolov and Schneider said in a statement on April 9. “We’ve been privileged to work with a great writing staff, production team and a brilliant cast of actors. We will miss them all.”
Creator and executive producer Dick Wolf also released a statement about the showrunners’ exits. “We’re grateful to Diane and Andy for nine fabulous seasons of Chicago Med. They helped us give NBC a No. 1 bonafide hit for almost a decade,” he said.
Frolov and Schneider’s replacements have not yet been announced and it is unclear if the show will go in a new creative direction under different leadership. Since Chicago Med is nearing a decade on air, perhaps this change-up will bring in new perspective and help the show stay fresh.
Chicago Med Season 9 airs on NBC on Wednesdays, at 8 p.m. EST and streams on Peacock.
