New ‘Thunderbolts’ trailer and footage: Sebastian Stan blows it up
It has already been a great year for Sebastian Stan thanks to his acclaimed performances in “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice” and the awards buzz and recognition that has come with each film. But the party won’t stop in 2025, even if Stan doesn’t land among the Best Actor nominees.
In May, Stan returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier in Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.” (The official title has an asterisk, but let’s keep it casual for now.)

On Saturday, during Disney’s first-ever D23 fan convention in Brazil, a new extended trailer for “Thunderbolts” made its debut, highlighting Stan’s effortless and brutal efficiency as Barnes as well as the project’s comedic tone.
“Thunderbolts” is Marvel’s answer to “The Suicide Squad” or an evolution off “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The film unites several Marvel antagonists, including Stan’s Barnes, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova (“Black Widow,” “Hawkeye), David Harbour’s Red Guardian (“Black Widow”), Wyatt Russell’s John Walker (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster (“Black Widow”), and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost (“Ant-Man and the Wasp”), for an adventure about ostensibly expendable characters. Other costars include Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who plays Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the MCU), Lewis Pullman (who might be playing Sentry in this film), Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendall Pierce. Jake Schreier (“Beef”) is the director.
Even the way Marvel describes “Thunderbolts” is edgy for the studio: “Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present “Thunderbolts*,” an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits.”
Pugh is considered the lead of the film and has already won praise from her castmates at this year’s edition of San Diego Comic-Con. “They’re all wonderful [co-stars], but I do have a favorite, and her name is Florence Pugh,” Harbour said on stage. “She is just electric to work with.”
“Thunderbolts*” is out on May 2, 2025.
