The 'John Wick 4' Post-Credits Scene Sets Up a Whole New World of Stories
This story contains MAJOR spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4.
John Wick has done a lot of killing. Consider this: Everything we've seen across the now four films has been post-retirement John Wick! It's scary to think about what went down during his "active" days. I'm remembering his violent past today because—spoiler! seriously, we keep warning you!!—one of our favorite killers has left us. The latest entry, John Wick: Chapter 4, has finally done the impossible. John Wick is dead.
Killed in his fight with Caine (Donnie Yen) and Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsg?rd) at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Wick leaves knowing that all his vengeance has finally been achieved. Sure, they can always bring Johnny Wick back for another seven movies should Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stalheski decide to continue. (They'll figure it out.) But, for now at least, Wick is gone. "We're going to give John Wick a rest," Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter. "Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we'll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, 'What do you think?' We'll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we'll make a movie."
Meanwhile, we're now on the precipice of the John Wick extended universe. Ballerina, a spinoff film featuring Ana de Armas, is already in production. (Reaves will also have a cameo in the film, likely placing the plot further in the past.) There's also the rumored The Continental television series for Amazon Prime Video. And now, Chapter 4's post-credits scene hints at another avenue. The clip ends with Rina Sawayama's new character, Akira, seeking revenge against Donnie Yen's Caine for murdering her father (Hiroyuki Sanada). "Her story is John Wick's story, in a lot of ways," co-writer Michael Finch said in an interview with Polygon. Sounds like we may as well get our hopes up.
Until all of that, R.I.P. John Wick.
