'The View' slams NBC after Matt Lauer allegations: 'More people should have been fired'
The View has had it with Matt Lauer. The panel weighed in on new allegations against the disgraced Today host which were revealed in an upcoming book, Catch and Kill, by journalist Ronan Farrow.
The book reveals new details about a complaint made by Brooke Nevils, a former NBC News staffer, who says she was raped by Lauer in a hotel room during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Lauer penned an open letter denying the allegation, saying the claim is “categorically false, ignores the facts and defies common sense.”
Farrow also reported that Nevils allegedly complained to higher-ups at NBC News about the incident but was ignored.
“The new allegation is quite upsetting,” said View co-host Joy Behar on Wednesday’s show.
Sunny Hostin also took issue with the alleged dismissal of Nevils’s claims by her bosses. “If it is true she reported to her superiors this terrible, terrible allegation, I don’t understand why they didn’t protect her. I don’t understand why they did not report a crime, and I don’t understand why they’re still working there,” she said.
“That’s what happens when you try to cover things up,” said Abby Huntsman. “More people should have been fired that were not,” she added.
NBC has denied that it ignored complaints about Lauer’s behavior, saying “Matt Lauer's conduct was appalling, horrific and reprehensible, as we said at the time. That's why he was fired within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Our hearts break again for our colleague.”
Meghan McCain said she was “done with Matt Lauer after Ann Curry,” referring to reports that Lauer was behind Curry’s dismissal from Today. “I thought he was a jerk after the way he treated her. I thought from that point on there should have been ramifications for his job,” she added.
Viewers on Twitter were mostly in agreement that Lauer’s firing was justified, but some took issue with McCain and Huntsman’s comments, pointing out that the two previously defended Brett Kavanaugh when he was accused of misconduct:
Meghan and Abby defended Brett Kavanaugh. I don't give a damn what they think about Matt Lauer. #TheView pic.twitter.com/xUu4ECmJJg

Meghan believes Matt Lauer accusations and has been ‘done with him’ forever yet Kavanaugh’s accusers were lying automatically?

Others applauded McCain for writing off Lauer for his behavior and his treatment of Ann Curry:
Can’t believe I’m saying this. In full agreement with Meghan McCain, I was so done with Matt Lauer after Ann Curry. #TheView

Thank you, @MeghanMcCain ! Agreed on #MattLauer after his and NBC's treatment of @AnnCurry . She has more class than Lauer could dream of.
