The most iconic Corvette moments in movies: 'xXx,' 'Terms of Endearment' and more
A hot car can make all the difference in a movie scene. Think about it: How much different would xXx play if Vin Diesel had stolen a station wagon instead of a Corvette? The part where he parachutes out of the car would be somewhat less dramatic, almost as if it needed a “wah-wah” sound effect or a slide whistle. That memorable Terms of Endearment scene with Jack Nicholson cruising along the beach in a sensible sedan wouldn’t work either.
As Chevy gears up to release the new Corvette C8 on July 18, here’s a closer look at some of moviegoers’ favorite scenes featuring the iconic car over the past four decades.
xXx
The 2002 action movie marked the debut of Xander Cage, a former athlete who now does things such as steal a C5 Corvette roadster and drive it off a bridge — in style, of course.
Boogie Nights
Mark Wahlberg’s porn star character Dirk Diggler cruises around as the king of Hollywood — sometimes in better shape than others — in a retro Corvette.
Rush Hour
The odd couple of Chris Tucker’s mouthy character, Carter, and his quiet partner, Jackie Chan’s Lee, chased down leads in the latter’s Corvette in this 1998 movie. While the two disagree over the music playing on the car’s radio, both seem to appreciate their ride.
Terms of Endearment
Whether you enjoy movie scenes with cars, the beach, or romance, the scene where Jack Nicholson is hanging out of a Corvette as Shirley MacLaine drives him along the shore, is pretty perfect. The best part is when she flings him into the water and their relationship turns sweet, even if only for a moment.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Heather Graham, who co-stars in Boogie Nights, is in a second movie on this list. This time, she gets to take the driver’s seat in the 1999 sequel to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. She’s an American CIA agent who happens to have both a Corvette with a very patriotic paint job and impeccable timing.
Con Air
If you ever want to see a Corvette fly — for a moment anyway — then check out this 1997 action flick, which depicts a ‘67 Corvette roadster being dragged along by an airplane.
Less Than Zero
The vintage Corvette that Andrew McCarthy’s character drives in this dark 1987 movie — which was released just a year after McCarthy starred with Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink — features prominently into the scene that shows Robert Downey Jr. singing Christmas carols, quite unlike anyone has sung them before.
He really should have buckled up.
