How Taylor Swift’s Concerts Inspired M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Movie
M. Night Shyamalan has revealed a somewhat unexpected source of inspiration for his next film: Taylor Swift’s concerts.
The Oscar-nominated director explained the idea behind his forthcoming film Trap during a recent interview with Empire. The thriller is due out in theaters next month.
In the one-sentence pitch the 53-year-old director provided to the British film magazine, Shyamalan explained: “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?”
As shown in a trailer for Trap released earlier this month, the film focuses on a father and daughter attending a crowded concert to see fictional pop star Lady Raven. The father, played by Josh Hartnett, discovers police are closely monitoring the concertgoers in the hope of tracking down a serial killer known as “The Butcher,” who the trailer indicates might be Hartnett’s character.

In addition to the Eras Tour-styled setting of the film and the echoes of the psychological thriller tone of 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, Shyamalan told the magazine his film also took inspiration from a real 1985 police sting operation. Dramatic themes aside, the Sixth Sense director appeared to enjoy the process of creating a concert for the sake of the film.
“One of the reasons to come see the movie at the movie theatre is because there’s literally a real concert that you can see nowhere except in that movie,” he explained to Empire.
The popularity of Lady Raven, who is played by Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka, appears comparable to that of Swift, who kicked off her hit international Eras Tour more than one year ago. The “Cruel Summer” songstress has set several audience records while taking her tour from country to country, performing in front of thousands of excited fans at every show.
Most recently, the pop superstar played three consecutive nights in the Netherlands. She will next bring her tour to Switzerland for a couple of shows in Zürich this week.
