SZA, ScHoolboy Q, More Perform At TDE’s Annual Christmas Concert
Top Dawg Entertainment recently capped off a decade of serenading the community of Watts, Calif., with their 10th annual TDE Christmas concert, which featured performances by SZA, ScHoolboy Q, and other star talent on the label.
Held over the course of two days at the Nickerson Gardens Housing Project, the first day of the event occurred on Tuesday (Dec. 19), with Wednesday (Dec. 20) marking the second and final day of festivities. Hosted by rapper Jay Rock, a Nickerson Gardens native and TDE’s longest tenured artist, the Grammy Award-winner spoke on his loyalty to his stomping grounds and the holiday concert being a beacon of light for the community.
“I grew up here and for people to see us come back and give back, it’s a blessing,” the 38-year-old said in a statement. “I was one of these kids out here, too. This lets them know that they can do this, too. If there’s a kid out there trying to strive for something great, it’s motivation that no matter where you come from, you can make it out if you stay dedicated.”
In addition to SZA, and ScHoolboy Q, other artists on the bill included SiR, Zacari and special guest 310Babii. The headliner of the event, Jay Rock was joined by rap star YG during his set, with the pair taking time to engage with the public after their performance.
The good times and vibes continued into the second day of the event, which included a job fair, free haircuts, and saw hundreds of local youth receive free gifts in celebration of the season.
Jay Rock is currently preparing for the release of his fourth studio album Eastside Johnny, which is slated to drop in 2024. His previous album, Redemption, released in 2018 and featured labelmates Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Sir, as well as guest appearances from Dcmbr, Future, Tee Grizzley, J. Cole, Jeremih, and Mozzy. In 2019, the rapper’s community initiatives and positive impacted earned him a key to the city of Watts.
