“Superman & Lois” stars Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch 'wish the best' to James Gunn's “Superman”

"We're lucky we got to go out the way we did," Tulloch tells EW.

As the era of Superman & Lois nears its end, with the final season debuting this fall, series stars Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch are ready to say goodbye to their iconic DC Comics characters after four seasons. But fans of the Man of Steel and Lois Lane won't have to wait long for the two to return in live action, as James Gunn's Superman movie, which will kick off the newly made-over DC cinematic universe, is expected in theaters July 11, 2025, with new actors taking on the legendary couple.

"We always knew this was going to happen at some point," Tulloch said during a visit to Entertainment Weekly's Comic-Con 2024 video studio Saturday. "We didn't go into this being like, 'We will be the final Lois and Clark, forever.' I wish the best to [Rachel] Brosnahan and [David] Corenswet going forward. I would have loved to play her longer, but didn't work out that way. We're lucky we got to go out the way we did."

Hoechlin agreed, adding that "it has always been that idea of, we are carrying the torch, we're going to pass it to the next people eventually, and that's today."

For Hoechlin, "There's something really beautiful about that. I've always really appreciated that, in knowing that eventually it was going to be handed off to the next ones. I'm grateful for the years that we had with it and I'm excited to see what they do with it. I'm sure they'll do an amazing job."

Elsewhere in EW's interview, Tulloch and Hoechlin warned that not everyone will make it out of the final season alive (including Superman himself, as revealed in the final season trailer). "There are multiple deaths," Tulloch said. "You are so going to cry. It'll be like cathartic tears."

"You're going to be a mess with this one," Hoechlin promised.

Earlier Saturday, Tulloch told a packed Hall H crowd during the Superman & Lois panel that she trusts in where DC is taking Superman and Lois Lane in the future.

"I know that everyone's bummed that we only went four seasons, but I do want to just reiterate: We are grateful we were given a chance to wrap up this series," she said. "And also, I know, I'm online, I've seen a lot of [comments] — I trust James Gunn and Peter Safran. I know them, sort of, they're great guys, and I trust that whatever vision they're enacting right now for the DC universe going forward is going to be awesome."

Hoechlin added that since he was "only supposed to do two episodes on Supergirl when this first started eight years ago," getting four seasons and the opportunity to end the show on their own terms has been a gift.

"Because that's how it started, I always looked at it as just passing the torch to the next guy — it just took a few more years than I thought it was going to to do that," he said. "But I'm just really grateful to have been a part of this community, this family, these characters. I know that they mean so much to people all around the world, and that's been true for, God, more than eight decades now. So it's a special thing to be a part of… and now it's time to pass the torch to the next guy, and I hope he kills it and I'm sure he will. So it's in good hands."

The final season of Superman & Lois takes flight with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Oct. 17, on the CW.
