Steve Lawrence, Grammy and Emmy-Winning Entertainer, Dead at 88

Steve Lawrence, the Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning entertainer whose career spanned seven decades, has died. He was 88 years old.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence died in Los Angeles Thursday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Lawrence was one-half of the popular singing duo Steve and Eydie, which he formed with his late wife, two-time Grammy winner Eydie Gormé (who died in 2013). Together, they won a Grammy for their 1960 album, We Got Us.

On television, Lawrence was a fixture on Steve Allen’s Tonight Show. He later went on to headline two short-lived variety programs — NBC’s The Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé Show (1958) and CBS’ The Steve Lawrence Show (1965) — and made reoccurring appearances on CBS’ The Carol Burnett Show. He also served as a panelist on the long-running game show What’s My Line?

He and Gormé would later take home the 1979 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Program for the NBC special Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin.

Additional TV credits included The Danny Kaye Show, The Judy Garland Show, The Julie Andrews Hour, Night Gallery, The Flip Wilson Show, Police Story, Murder She Wrote, The Nanny (on which he recurred as Fran Drescher’s TV dad, Morty Fine), Hot in Cleveland, Two and a Half Men and CSI.
