Soundtrack canceled after one season at Netflix
Netflix has hit eject on Soundtrack.
The streamer confirmed to EW on Friday that it has canceled the musical, lip-syncing drama after only one season. Soundtrack hit Netflix on Dec. 18, and it starred Paul James and Callie Hernandez as star-crossed lovers working their way through the struggles of modern life while lip-syncing along to the soundtrack of their inner monologue.
The starry cast, which also featured Madeleine Stowe, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jenna Dewan, and more, lip-synced (and danced) along to everything from crooner classics to contemporary pop songs. “This really was predicated on this idea that we all have of our soundtracks and when we think about music, when we hear a song in our head, we hear the artist,” creator Joshua Safran previously told EW. “You hear Beyoncé, you hear Stevie Nicks. You do not hear yourself singing it. That was where the concept came from.”
Soundtrack began its life as Mixtape at Fox before the network ultimately passed on the pilot and it found a new home at Netflix. That home was short-lived, however, when Netflix announced its cancellation on Friday.
Safran had told EW prior to the show’s premiere that he had plans for a second season, but there’s no word yet on whether he might shop the series elsewhere. “We just have a lot more we want to do,” he said. “I actually had 13 episodes, so when it moved to Netflix we had to shave three off of that and push the story together. There’s so much more.”
For now, it will all live as unreleased tracks.
