Somehow Michael Che and Colin Jost's Emmys Monologue Was Worse Than Weekend Update
To their credit, Colin Jost and Michael Che got through their Emmys opening monologue without saying anything aggressively problematic (a pleasant surprise to all!). Instead, they managed to meet the very low expectations expected of Saturday Night Live's hosts of the forgettable current iteration of Weekend Update. They stood up there and they spoke words that some might consider jokes. They talked about all the shitty guys in Hollywood (Che said they were proud to be there with all the men “who haven’t gotten caught yet”). They lightly touched on politics. They made some awkward #MeToo jokes and some even more awkward jokes about representation in television. And, yes, there was some Roseanne material.
“Roseanne was canceled by herself, but picked up by white nationalists,” Che joked. “How messed up is your life that you have to go to the Middle East just to get peace of mind?”
There was even a bizarre joke about an all-white reboot of Atlanta called 15 Miles Outside of Atlanta.
Brian Tyree Henry didn't approve:
At least Weekend Update had Stefon.
Anyway, there's, like, eight more hours of this tonight.
