‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ to ‘Sydney White': A guide to all the live-action adaptations ahead of Disney’s newest ‘Snow White’ release
After multiple delays, 'Snow White' starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot finally hits theaters this Friday.
It’s been a winding road riddled with controversies and viral moments that really put the sentiment of “all press is good press” to the test, but Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White is finally out this weekend. Starring West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler and Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot, Snow White (2025) is a modernized retelling of the 1937 animated classic, and while the film has received a lot of flack for straying from the path of Snow White’s story, it’s not the first live-action adaptation to do so.
Disney’s 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is based on the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Since Walt Disney first brought the story to life onscreen — marking the first full feature to use cel animation and the first animated feature film ever made in the U.S. — there have been many retellings of the tale. Here’s a breakdown of all the live-action Snow White theatrical releases (because if we dove into Once Upon a Time or that spooky Sigourney Weaver Showtime movie we’d be here all day).
When does Snow White (2025) come out?
Snow White hits theaters Friday, Mar. 21, 2025.
When will the new Snow White movie be on Disney+?
Snow White (2025) will have a theatrical release before it eventually lands on Disney+. Currently, there is no confirmed streaming release date for the new Snow White.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
The Snow White that started it all — and the very first Disney princess! Based on the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, this 1937 animated film is considered the “classic” on this list — though the stars of Snow White (2025) may not be its biggest fans. Adriana Caselotti voices Snow White, Lucille La Verne is the Queen/Witch.
You can catch the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Disney+.
Snow White and the Three Stooges (1961)
The story of Snow White, but make it a slapstick comedy! This 1961 adaptation of the Disney classic sees the titular princess sent away to the forest in search of the seven dwarfs, only to find that Moe, Larry and Curly are house-sitting for them. Olympic figure skater Carol Heiss stars as Snow White in this version.
You can rent or buy Snow White and the Three Stooges on Amazon and other VOD platforms.
Sydney White (2007)
Amanda Bynes stars as Sydney White in this 2007 Snow White adaptation. Sydney heads off to college with big dreams of joining her late mother’s sorority, but clashes with the Queen of Kappa. Along the way she catches the eye of Tyler Prince and finds herself living with a gaggle of seven geeky guys.
You can rent or buy this extremely 2000s comedy on Amazon and other VOD platforms.
Mirror Mirror (2012)
Julia Roberts and Lily Collins star in the comedic re-imagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale where Snow White leads a group of bandits in a rebellion against the tyrannical Evil Queen. Armie Hammer plays Prince Charming, and Nathan Lane plays the Queen’s henchman. And not to spoil anything but the whole tale ends with a musical number that people are still talking about today.
Mirror Mirror is currently available to stream on Starz.
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
Charlize Theron plays a truly chilling Evil Queen/Sorceress in this 2012 reimagining of Snow White, directed by Rupert Sanders, with Kristen Stewart stepping into the role of the titular character. Snow White and the Huntsman sees the princess hunted by a contracted assassin — the Huntsman (played by Chris Hemsworth) — before the pair decide to join forces against the Queen.
You can rent or buy this dark and gritty version of Snow White on Amazon and other VOD platforms.
The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016)
Both a prequel and sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, The Huntsman: Winter’s War follows events preceding and proceeding what Snow White gets up to in the first film. Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Nick Frost and Sam Claflin all return for the second movie in this twisted franchise, joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. Sadly, Snow White herself (Kristen Stewart) sits this one out, but it still takes place in the same universe, and is worth a watch if you’re a franchise completist.
You can stream The Huntsman: Winter’s War on Max.
Snow White (2025)
Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot star as Snow White and the Evil Queen in this beleaguered live-action remake of the 1937 original. While both stars and all the CGI dwarfs have received their fair share of criticism, early reviews of the film are quite positive.
Tickets to see Snow White in theaters are available now.
Bonus: More animated Snow White adaptations!
There haven't just been live-action retellings of Snow White's story, the princess has also been reimagined in her animated form a few times.
Charming (2018)
Featuring a star-studded vocal cast including Demi Lovato, Wilmer Valderrama, Sia, Ashley Tisdale, G.E.M. and Avril Lavigne, this oft-overlooked 2018 animated film follows a cursed prince charming and his three fiancees: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and, you guessed it, Snow White. It’s absolutely nothing like the original animated Snow White, but fans of the Disney princess may enjoy Charming, nonetheless.
You can stream Charming on Netflix.
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (2019)
This 2019 English-language South Korean animated film based on the original Brothers Grimm fairytale follows seven princes who have been cursed by a witch to appear as green dwarfs until they receive a kiss from “the most beautiful woman in the world.” This story’s Snow White is an overweight princess who finds a pair of magical red shoes that alter her appearance, making her look thinner and more conventionally beautiful. While wearing the shoes, Snow befriends the seven crushed dwarfs, but fears they won’t appreciate her true form. Chlo? Grace Moretz voices Snow, and Sam Claflin plays Merlin, one of the seven princes.
