Snoop Dogg Blasted For MLK Tribute After Trump Inauguration Weekend Performance
Snoop Dogg did what anyone would do this week and posted a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his national holiday. Under normal circumstances, this would be celebrated, but fans flooded his comments with negativity because he performed for Donald Trump during his inauguration weekend celebrations.
The inauguration falling on MLK Day this past Monday (Jan. 20) didn’t help the 53-year-old rapper’s case; in fact, his “transgressions” were fresher in users’ minds. The Long Beach, Calif. artist shared multiple clips of Dr. King’s speeches and quotes while keeping his caption short and sweet with the prayer hands emoji and a United States flag emoji.
“Posting MLK after supporting Trump is wild,” one fan wrote in his comments. “Damn bro, you coulda died a legend,” another user wrote. One fan compared him to Dave Chappelle, who famously turned down life-changing money in the 2000s because it didn’t align with what he wanted his life to be. “Dave Chappelle walked away from 50 million dollars to keep his integrity in tact,” the fan wrote. “And he would’ve done it even if it was POTUS, so the ancestors could be proud he didn’t embarrass their journey. Now, he’s three times richer, but more than that. He’s more respected because he didn’t. That’s how it’s done.”
Elon Musk caught a stray bullet from one user who was also disappointed with Snoop Dogg. “Dude, Elon just threw a Nazi salute at the inauguration,” they wrote. “That’s the team you’re on now.” A final user, among the flood of comments kept things close to home and asked what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would think about the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” artist appearing at any Donald Trump inauguration events. Check out the MLK tribute and flood of comments above.
Outside of Snoop’s Instagram comments, fans were quick to bring up his judging of Black artists who performed at Trump’s inauguration in 2017. He called them “jigaboos” and “Uncle Toms,” thus his decision over eight years later was quite a change of heart. It gets even more murky when recalling that the West Coast legend expressed his “love and respect” for the controversial President for pardoning Michael “Harry-O” Harris, the co-founder of Death Row Records.
The Missionary rapper wasn’t alone in receiving vitriol. Nelly, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy also performed for Donald Trump over the weekend at his Crypto Ball (Jan. 17). This isn’t the first instance of rappers aligning themselves with the two-time President, and it likely won’t be the last.
