'Singles' cast: Then and now
When Campbell Scott appeared as mass-transit planner in Singles, he had only a handful of acting credits to his name—though one was Dying Young, the Julia Roberts weepie. In the 23 years since, the native New Yorker has appeared in more than 25 films and currently plays a main character on USA’s Royal Pains. He’s also slated to appear opposite Adrian Brody in the upcoming thriller Manhattan Nocturne.
Kyra Sedgwick traded the stonewashed jeans she wore in Singles for floral print dresses during her six-season run on the hugely successful TNT police procedural The Closer, which earned her five Best Actress Emmy nominations and one win. The actress has two movies scheduled for release this year, including the thriller Big Sky opposite Disney starlet Bella Thorne, and she's guest-starred on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
After playing romantic but insecure coffee shop waitress, Janet, Bridget Fonda appeared in a number of other critically acclaimed hits including Jackie Brown (1997) and A Simple Plan (1998). But Fonda, now 51 and married to composer Danny Elfman, hasn’t made a movie since a serious car accident in 2003.
"My character is not a cliched heavy-metal guy," Matt Dillon told EW in 1992 of his role as rocker Cliff Poncier. "We wanted to make it funny without making fun of him." He’s flexed his funny in plenty of films since—among them, There’s Something About Mary—but he is slated to take a darker turn as a secret service agent in M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming Fox crime series, Wayward Pines.
Not unlike her character in Singles, who took a no-nonsense approach to dating, Sheila Kelley has since become a savvy businesswoman with a pole-dance fitness empire that includes exercise studios, DVDs, and a book. She’s continued to act in films like 2014’s The Guest, and had episode arcs on popular shows including ER, Lost, and Gossip Girl.
Bill Pullman had to wait a few years after playing Singles' sweet plastic surgeon before he finally got the girl in a movie (While You Were Sleeping with Sanda Bullock became a huge hit). Since then, he's been ubiquitous on big and small screens, with memorable roles in Sleepless in Seattle, Independence Day, and the NBC series 1600 Penn. The 61-year-old is busier than ever: He has two films slated for release this year (American Ultra and Brother in Laws) and will return for Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day sequel.
Since his minor role as a bike-riding lothario in Singles following his stint on thirtysomething, Horton has been very busy behind the camera in TV, directing episodes of The Shield, Grey’s Anatomy, and more recently, NBC’s new American Odyssey.
Who else but Eddie Vedder could have played Eddie Vedder? The Pearl Jam frontman continues to perform with the band. Since Singles, Vedder has dipped his toe back into film, appearing as himself in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and providing music for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild.
The future Entourage star gave the world a preview of his motormouth skills as grocery-store cashier Doug Hughley. On top of the film version of the HBO series, opening June 5, Piven is about to shoot the fourth season of his PBS series Mr. Selfridge.
TV fans might be more likely to recognize True-Frost as Roland “Prez” Pryzbylewski from HBO’s The Wire than Singles. He’ll appear next in NBC’s American Odyssey, the show for which his co-star Peter Horton serves as executive producer.
Since playing Kyra Sedgwick's pony-tailed ex Andy in Singles, Le Gros has worked on a number of films and had recurring roles on Ally McBeal, Justified, and Girls, where he played a father that hires Jessa as a babysitter and subsequently tries to hook up with her.
Eric Stoltz has stayed busy in front of and behind the camera since his cameo as the world’s worst mime. More recently, Stoltz has shifted his focus to directing TV, helming episodes of How to Get Away with Murder and Madame Secretary.
