The actress has co-starred as wealthy Essex College student Leighton Murray since The Sex Lives of College Girls debuted in 2021. In the Season 2 finale, which dropped last December, Leighton opted to leave the Kappa Beta Rho sorority (which she’d wanted to join since arriving at Essex) and left her new love interest, Tatum, to get back together with ex-girlfriend Alicia. Since starring on The Sex Lives of College Girls, Rapp has also joined Paramount+’s movie adaptation of the Mean Girls musical (as Regina George, a role she previously played on Broadway) and has put out solo music, including the EP Everything to Everyone.
“We love @reneerapp so much and of course will be so sad to say goodbye [to] Leighton Murray. But we can’t wait to see our friend on tour!!” co-creator Mindy Kaling wrote in her Instagram Stories.
Added co-creator Justin Noble on his Instagram Stories: “I remember so vividly when Mindy Kaling and I started talking about Leighton Murray and the journey we wanted for this character. And how when we saw Reneé Rapp’s audition, it barely took two minutes for us to immediately know she was the one. I’m so proud of her story, and how Reneé Rapp brought her to life with such a nuanced and real and funny and award-winning performance — and we will miss both Reneé and Leighton.”
Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls was announced in December 2022. There’s currently no timetable for its premiere.
