Sheryl Underwood Breaks Down In Tears While Speaking On Terence Crutcher
The killing of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher has sparked outrage, sadness and hopelessness in America, and further widened the divide between African-Americans and law enforcement.
As many took to social media to express their angst over the latest police shooting, The Talk’s Sheryl Underwood threw political correctness to the wind and spoke passionately about Crutcher’s brutal killing, and what she thinks needs to be done to change the social climate.
“You gotta make it a hate crime. You’ve gotta put people in jail. When you shoot somebody under the color of authority you need to lose your job, and you need to lose your livelihood and you need to lose your freedom like every other American loses their freedom. There needs to be consequences,” Underwood said.
Footage of Crutcher’s last moments have gone viral, and show the unarmed man with his hands in the air on a Tulsa, Oklahoma road before being shot by police officers. Co-host Sarah Gilbert was visibly flabbergasted after watching the disturbing video, and questioned how the officer could’ve perceived Crutcher, a man stuck on the side of the road because of car trouble, as dangerous.
“This is a new low to me, ” Gilbert said. “It’s so disheartening to me. He didn’t have a weapon. He didn’t have any drugs. He didn’t have any behavior that was alarming. His arms were up. I don’t understand. There was practically seven police officers there or something. Why this officer could’ve interpreted as a threat, is so beyond me. I mean, I don’t know”
Aisha Taylor chimned in and said its time America call a spade a spade and confront head on it rich and bloody racial history. “Look, this is hard stuff to talk about, but we have a legacy of racism in this country and if we don’t start calling this racism then we can’t fight it.”
As the segment was coming to a close, Underwood made sure to punctuate there are good officers in America, but the ones who commit these atrocities need to be held accountable. Watch Underwood’s passionate plea below.
