'Sex and the City' star addresses rumors she may run for governor of New York
Former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon played coy on Today when asked about the rumors she may challenge Andrew Cuomo for governor when he runs for his third term next year. Nixon never came right out and said it, but as she went on about public education in the state, it sounded like she may be laying the groundwork for a run.
It’s been reported that she is being urged to run by some liberal groups, and she hit every step that a politician gearing up for a campaign would.
First thing Nixon did was relate to the average voter, saying that she has three kids who are either in or have gone through the public school system. Next, she threw out a statistic to really get the people of New York revved up.
“We’ve got a real problem on our hands in New York state,” Nixon said. “We are 49th in terms of equitable funding. That means there’s only one state that’s worse than us, and that’s Illinois.”
Then it was time for Nixon to do a favorite among politicians: attack your opponent. Nixon went after Cuomo for the discrepancy between how much is spent on the average pupil in wealthy areas as opposed to how much is spent in poor areas.
“Between our hundred richest schools and our hundred poorest schools, there’s a $10,000 gap on what we spend per pupil,” Nixon said, later adding, “That gap now between our richest schools and our poorest schools is wider under Governor Cuomo than it’s ever been before, and that’s gotta stop.
Nixon also said she has talked to parents all over the state of New York about the issue.
