See rare and wonderful Disneyland memorabilia from Small World, Haunted Mansion, and the Enchanted Tiki Room — before it goes on auction block
Neil Patrick Harris recently admitted to dropping a bundle on a Disney Haunted Mansion painting — and after you check out this new Disney memorabilia auction, you may be tempted to do the same.
On April 28, Van Eaton Galleries will be auctioning the collection of Rolly Crump, the artist and animator who designed such iconic Disneyland attractions as the Haunted Mansion, the Enchanted Tiki Room, and It’s a Small World. The colorful auction catalog is filled with delightful artifacts from Disney’s golden years, much of it in Crump’s distinctive style of mid-century whimsy with a touch of ’60s psychedelia. Warning: After checking out the highlights below, you may be inspired to turn your home into a Disneyland attraction.
It’s a Small World Clock Concept Model
The centerpiece of the “It’s a Small World’ ride, which originated as an attraction at the 1964 World’s Fair, is a smiling clock tower designed by Crump. Here’s the original concept model — a detailed wood and metal sculpture that’s almost 2 feet tall.
Enchanted Tiki Room Fountain Shield
This 4-foot-high sculpture was created but not used for the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. Crump apparently kept the fiberglass fountain for his personal use.
Sleeping Beauty Animation Cell
Before becoming a Disneyland Imagineer, Crump was an assistant animator on several features, including Sleeping Beauty. This original animation cell features Aurora’s color-changing dress.
Haunted Mansion Lenticular Sailing Ship Portrait
Created for the 30th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion, this lenticular painting of a ship changes from ordinary to haunted as the viewer walks by.
Signed Flying Saucer Poster
One of Crump’s most famous designs was this 1958 poster for the Tomorrowland attraction. This is a rare reproduction print from the 1990s.
Haunted Mansion Stretch Portrait Tapestries
These four large wall hangings duplicate the portraits from the famous “Stretching Room” in the Haunted Mansion — turn-of-the-century paintings that turn macabre as they become longer.
Museum of the Weird Séance Room Concept Illustration
True Disney buffs will drool over the auction’s artifacts of lost Disneyland history, including concept drawings for a Museum of the Weird attraction that was to be built in the entrance of the Haunted Mansion. Here is Crump’s sketch for the Séance Room, which is full of mystical references and unnervingly lifelike furnishings.
