SEE IT: Mets perform ‘OMG’ with Jose Iglesias at Citi Field event
In a year full of ups and downs, players meetings and grimaces, fans can file “OMG” as its own chapter for the Mets’ 2024 season.
“OMG” is, of course, the song by infielder Jose Iglesias. The single has become a hit with the team, played in the clubhouse after every win, and the players do the hand motions on the bench whenever a home run or something good happens.
And during a Thursday night event at Citi Field, Iglesias' teammates showed their love for the song when they joined him in his performance.
The legend of “OMG” continues to grow as the Mets continue to win. Iglesias was called up from the minors at the end of May when Jeff McNeil began to struggle and Brett Baty was optioned, and the veteran infielder has made the most of his time in the majors.
So far, he’s 14-for-35 with six RBI and provided the Mets a spark at the plate and on the field. While just a coincidence, the Mets turned around their season around the time Iglesias was called up.
In June, the Mets are an MLB-best 15-6 and have climbed back from a season-high 11 games under .500 to get back to 39-39 on the year. With every victory, “OMG” can be heard playing in the clubhouse wherever they play and it’s become a song the team has rallied around.
“This [song] is all about energy, all about winning,” Iglesias told SNY’s Steve Gelbs. “The guys loved it and I’m humble to make this song. The fans are already clicking with it, and we’re on a roll, and everything is right where it needs to be. And oh my God, I’m so happy.”
Iglesias says he’s always been a “music guy” and that when he stopped playing baseball for a short time, he came up with the concept of his song.
“I realized how time flies and how important it is to live in the present and enjoy what you have and maximize the possibility of enjoyment and that’s what the song is about,” he explained. “It’s about, just be here, we’re blessed and thank you God.”
The song has gained enough traction that Iglesias’ camp has moved the release of the song from July 3 to Friday, June 28.
Once the song is released Friday afternoon, everyone can enjoy “OMG” as much as the Mets do.
“We’re having a great time right after every win, it’s something very fun to be a part of in that clubhouse when we win.”
