Sean 'Diddy' Combs' alleged drug mule's criminal case dropped
An alleged drug mule for disgraced music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs is no longer facing charges, his lawyer says.
Brendan Paul, 25, was originally accused of transporting a wide array of drugs for Combs, including GHB, the common date-rape drug allegedly used against his victims. He was arrested at a Miami airport earlier this year for transporting cocaine and marijuana candy.
Paul's lawyer, Brian H. Bieber, confirmed to USA TODAY Wednesday that the case, amended only to include felony cocaine possession, was dropped "in its entirety." Bieber said Paul successfully completed a pre-trial diversion course sometimes offered for first-time offenders.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office for comment.
A former Syracuse basketball player, Paul is accused in a civil suit brought by music producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones Jr. of running drugs for Combs and helping negotiate fees for sex workers hired by the rapper.
Jones worked with Combs on his most recent project "The Love Album: Off the Grid" and accused the musician of sexually assaulting him as well as running a sex trafficking operation with the help of several associates.
One such associate was Paul, named in the suit as a "mule" tasked with transporting drugs and carrying Combs' firearm when they went out. The wide-ranging civil suit made accusations against several celebrities including Cuba Gooding Jr., who Jones alleged assaulted him, and rapper Yung Miami, who Combs has dated on and off, alleged in the filings to have transported drugs and served as a sex worker for the music mogul.
Paul's arrest came on the same day that Homeland Security agents raided Combs' homes in both Miami and Los Angeles as part of a federal investigation into the rapper. Several suits had already been filed in New York at that point accusing Combs of rape.
The dismissal of Paul's case comes as Combs' own legal situation appears increasingly apocalyptic. The rapper is facing an avalanche of civil suits alleging rape. Dozens of accusers, including some minors, have come forward claiming they were drugged and assaulted. The result has been the appearance of a lifelong pattern of abuse and an empire and career collapsing on itself as that alleged pattern becomes public. Combs has consistently denied all claims against him.
"These complaints are full of lies. We will prove them false and seek sanctions against every unethical lawyer who filed fictional claims against him," Combs' team said in a statement to USA TODAY after three new lawsuits were filed Friday.
