Sandra Lee Sells Memoir to Sony TV (EXCLUSIVE)

Sandra Lee is moving from the kitchen to behind the scenes. The celebrity chef is turning her life story into a TV movie, Variety has learned exclusively.

Her 2007 best-selling memoir “Made from Scratch” has been optioned by Sony for the small screen. The book chronicles Lee’s troubled childhood, as she coped with an abusive, drug-addicted mother and the responsibility then placed on her to take care of her siblings.

Helen Verno, Sony’s executive vice president of movies and miniseries, bought the rights to Lee’s memoir after a chance meeting with Lee on a recent business trip. Judith Verno (“The Lizzie Borden Chronicles,” “Masters of Sex”) will serve as executive producer, as will Lee. The search is now underway for a writer to develop the screenplay.

“I’m so honored that Sony has optioned the rights to my life story, and to have Judith Verno confirmed as this project’s executive producer is an absolute dream,” Lee told Variety.

Lee, whose partner Andrew Cuomo is New York’s governor, rose to fame for her “Semi-Homemade Cooking” series on the Food Network. “Sandra Lee’s Taverns, Lounges & Clubs” now airs on the Cooking Channel.
