The Rookie Season 7 Arrives in 2025: Here’s Everything We Know
Mid-Wilshire Division will look a little bit different when ABC’s The Rookie opens Season 7 in early 2025.
More from TVLine
As detailed below, one cast member will not be returning for Season 7. And with Officer Celina Juarez about to finish her rookie stint, it’s time for some fresh blood to enter the mix.
Season 7 also has multiple cliffhangers of a sort to revisit, given the events of last May’s finale. Officer Lucy Chen and Sergeant Tim Bradford are still broken up as a couple, though when last we tuned in, the latter was resolved to address his personal issues, and be worthy of a relationship.
Office John Nolan and his firefighter wife Bailey had no luck conceiving a baby in Season 6, and instead look forward to adopting (though cast member Jenna Dewan’s real-life maternity leave may delay the payoff on that arc).
Lastly, you can’t have good guys without bad guys, and Season 6 ended with shady lawyer Monica Stevens in the wind after making much mayhem. Also, Nolan’s adversary Oscar Hutchinson and Bailey’s ex-husband Jason both broke out of prison (with Monica’s help), and their whereabouts are similarly unknown.
The last few episodes of Season 6 left a few characters relatievly unscathed, “but if there’s no drama, there’s no drama,” showrunner Alexi Hawley told TVLine. “So I do think we’ll start to kick the tires a bit on some of the other relationships, yes.”
Here is what we know about Season 7 cast changes, the premiere date, if all episodes will air uninterrupted, and more.
Who’s Not Returning for Season 7?
Tru Valentino, who joined The Rookie as recurring in Season 4 and got promoted in Season 5, will not be back as a series regular for Season 7, as Officer Aaron Thorsen.
“I will always cherish my time on The Rookie, but couldn’t be more excited for what the future has in store,” Valentino wrote in an Instagram story in August. “I adore the friends and relationships made while being there. It was such an amazing opportunity, and I feel so lucky to have had the last three seasons. Thank you to the best fans in the world. I know I don’t talk much, but I appreciate you all so much. You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire precinct. Until then, 7 Adam 19, this is Officer Thorsen, over and out!”
Who’s New for Season 7?
Referring to Lisseth Chavez’s character, who showed up in Season 5 as a rookie, showrunner Alexi Hawley told TVLine, “We’re looking at the end of Celina’s 13 months, so to speak, at some point in the [coming] season, so I think it’s fair to say that there might be a new rookie or two showing up at some point.”
Turns out there will be not one new recruit in Season 7, but two — in the form of Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher, who have been cast as recurring guest stars.
Augustine, whose TV credits include All American (as Clay), Godfather of Harlem and Shameless, will play Miles, a Texas transfer who despite having two years under his belt, will be a rookie at the LAPD.
Keleher, of Funny or Die’s The Egos, will play Seth, who may seem like the ideal police officer, but the job requires quick, decisive action — and that, alas, is something that doesn’t come naturally to him.
When Will The Rookie Return?
ABC’s fall schedule featured a Tuesday line-up of Dancing With the Stars leading into the new drama High Potential. Neither Will Trent nor The Rookie were anywhere to be seen, because they were both held for “midseason.”
“The Rookie and Will Trent are two of the cornerstones of our schedule,” Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group, told TVLine when explaining the decision to hold both for midseason. “It felt like the best way to platform those shows for success was to launch them in January, when we have this huge promotional platform in New Years Rockin’ Eve as well as college sports and Christmas programming.”
The Rookie Season 7 now has an exact premiere date: Tuesday, Jan. 7, now airing at 10/9c.
Will Season 7 Air Uninterrupted?
The good news about the The Rookie‘s midseason premiere is that once it and Will Trent return, they’ll both do so in (nearly) non-stop runs — of 18 episodes each.
“They’re going to go straight through,” Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group said back in May, “and that kind of momentum of original episodes week-in and week-out is just a very powerful engine for both of these shows.”
As it turns out, though, there may be a one-week break for both The Rookie and Will Trent — to accommodate a presidential address.
