Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?
Gadd called Bell “one of the greatest actors of his generation.” “When I wrote the show, I did it with him in mind, never thinking for a second we would manage to land him,” he added.
Half Man is also Bell’s first BBC TV series. He won a BAFTA for Billy Elliott two decades ago, with past credits including All of Us Strangers, Rocketman and Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool.
The series is created, written and executive produced by Gadd alongside executive producers Tally Garner and Morven Reid from Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company), Gaynor Holmes for the BBC and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland.
Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck will direct Half Man, which will be produced by Wendy Griffin. The series is made by Mam Tor Productions for HBO, BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland. Banijay Rights handles international distribution outside the UK, Ireland, and the US. Screen Scotland supports Half Man.
Gadd is repped by UTA; Markham, Froggatt and Irwin; Casarotto Ramsay & Associates; Individual Artist Management and Granderson Des Rochers
Bell is repped by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
