'Petty' Don Lemon says he wouldn't shake Trump's hand at Bush funeral if he were in Obama's shoes
On Wednesday’s CNN Tonight With Don Lemon, while discussing the handshake between President Trump and the Obamas at George H.W. Bush’s funeral, Lemon said — actually, he showed — how he would not have shaken the president’s hand if he were in Barack Obama’s shoes.
“I’m going to say that I don’t think I would shake hands with him. I would just — nope, couldn’t do it,” Lemon said during crosstalk with fellow CNN host Chris Cuomo. “I’m not that big a person. I would hope that I would be, but I don’t — I can’t fake the funk as they say.”
Then, after Lemon physically acted out a handshake snub with a member of his technical crew, Cuomo said to Lemon, “You’re petty and small.”
Lemon cited the Trump-led birther movement, among other insults Trump has hurled at the Obamas over the years, as his main reason for the hypothetical snub.
“This is not about ideology. This is about the way someone conducts themselves. If you constantly called me names and you were rude to me and you — why should I have to show you respect at all?” Lemon asked.
After the near-seven minute discussion between the two, one thing is clear: While Lemon may be petty, Barack Obama definitely is not.
“That’s why he’s president and I’m not,” Lemon said of Obama’s willingness to shake Trump’s hand. “Just call me ‘Petty McPetty’ because I would not have — and I wouldn’t care what the world said if they asked me about it.”
CNN Tonight airs weekdays at 10 p.m. on CNN.
