Peter Dinklage Still Defends Game of Thrones’ Ending: ‘You Don’t Have to Agree With Me’
Peter Dinklage is still a fan of Game of Thrones’ ending.
Dinklage played Tyrion Lannister for all eight seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones, which premiered in April 2011. The series’ controversial finale, which many fans have expressed their disapproval of, then aired in May 2019.
In December 2021, Dinklage told The New York Times that he liked the Game of Thrones finale and believed a lot of the fan backlash stemmed from people being upset the show was over.
“We were going off the air and they didn’t know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that,” he said at the time.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Dinklage further reflected on Game of Thrones’ ending now that the series has been done for approximately five years.
What did Peter Dinklage say about Game of Thrones’ ending?
“Again, just my opinion,” Dinklage said. “I like the finale! You don’t have to agree with me. How about if I said like, “Yeah, I agree. I hated the finale. The whole last season was horrible”? I mean, that would sit much worse than if I said I loved it, which I did. I can’t speak for anybody else’s opinion, and that’s what makes what we do fun, because everybody does have a difference of opinion and everybody gets to write about it and chat about it and drink over it and argue about it. It’s great. I mean, I think it means you’re doing something right. It’s like an old Irish way of looking at the world. There’s something wrong if everything’s OK.”
While Game of Thrones has ended, there have been two seasons of the prequel spin-off series House of the Dragon that have since aired. Another spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is expected to air in 2025, while several others are also in various stages of development.
All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are currently streaming on Max.
