Pedro Almodovar to direct Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz in 'Dolor Y Gloria'
Pedro Almodovar has set his next project, reteaming with Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz for Dolor Y Gloria (Pain And Glory). Shooting will begin on the film in July, Almodovar’s production house El Deseo announced Tuesday morning. Banderas will star opposite Asier Etxeandía (Ma Ma) with Cruz and another Almodovar vet, Julieta Serrano, featuring.
This is Almodovar’s 21st film and will tell the story of a series of meetings, “some physical and others remembered after decades, by a film director in his decline,” the Spanish master said in a statement. He added the subjects will be “First loves, second loves, mother, mortality, an actor with whom the director worked, the 60s, the 80s and the present. And the emptiness, the immeasurable emptiness before the impossibility of continuing to make films.”
Further, said the Oscar winner, the film “also talks about creation, cinematographic and theatrical, and of the impossibility of separating creation from one’s life.”
Unlike his last film, Julieta, Almodovar says Dolor Y Gloria will be a film with male protagonists and “two actresses that I adore.”
Banderas and Cruz have a long history with Almodovar and both appeared in 2013’s I’m So Excited.
