The Orville Isn’t ‘Dead’ Yet, Says Scott Grimes and Seth MacFarlane
The Orville creator, writer, and star Seth MacFarlane, who starred in the sci-fi drama as Captain Edward Mercer, suggested that the acclaimed series is not over yet. Despite the show’s uncertain future, the Ted director offered a vague answer concerning The Orville’s possible fourth season.
“All I can tell you is that there is no official death certificate for The Orville,” MacFarlane told TheWrap. “It is still with us. I can’t go any further than that at the moment. There are too many factors.”
On the other hand, MacFarlane’s co-star Scott Grimes — who played Lieutenant Gordon Malloy in the series — also told TheWrap that conversations about the fourth season started even before the Hollywood strikes began.
“I do know that we are still talking about it. It’s not dead in any sort of way whatsoever. It’s just about when, where and how and building the stuff again,” said Grimes. “I’m excited because it’s one of the greatest things to work on. So I just have my fingers crossed. And I know Seth wants to do it and that usually holds a lot of power. And I hope he gets to because it’s one of his babies that he just loves and it’s a blast to work on.”
What is The Orville about?
Serving as MacFarlane’s homage to Star Trek and its Next Generation spin-off, The Orville — set in the far future — follows the U.S.S. Orville crew as they go on a mission to explore the mysteries of the universe.
The first two seasons of The Orville aired on Fox before Hulu picked up the series for a third season. The third season, titled The Orville: New Horizons, premiered on March 10, 2022.
In addition to MacFarlane and Grimes, the rest of The Orville cast also includes Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Peter Macon, J. Lee, Mark Jackson, Jessica Szohr, Halston Sage, and Anne Winters.
