Olympic track star confirms she paid her rent after Flavor Flav and Alexis Ohanian stepped in

The legend of Flavor Flav continues to grow.

The rapper, along with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, chipped in to pay the rent for U.S. Olympic track and field athlete Veronica Fraley after she said she didn’t have enough money to do so herself on the eve of her Olympic debut.

“I compete in the Olympic Games TOMORROW and can’t even pay my rent,” Fraley wrote on X on Aug. 1. “My school only sent about 75% of my rent while they pay football players (who haven’t won anything) enough to buy new cars and houses.”

Fraley is the 2024 NCAA discus champion, earning All-American honors at Vanderbilt University, while also finishing in 15th place at the 2023 World Championships. Her post caught the eye of Flav, who replied that he would help her.

“I gotchu... DM me and I’ll send payment TODAY so you don’t have to worry bout it TOMORROW... and imma be rooting for ya tomorrow LETZ GO,!!!” he wrote.

That prompted Ohanian, who is married to tennis superstar Serena Williams, to get involved as well.

“C’mon now! I’ll split it with @flavorfav” he replied to the rapper.

Ohanian then posted what looks like a screen shot from an online payment of $7,760 indicating he had indeed made a payment, alongside a note reading “‘MURICA” with flag and gold medal emojis.

Ohanian also wrote that he chose to pay $7,760 because the number refers to his company, which is called Seven Seven Six. Fraley did not respond to NBC News' request for comment, while a representative for Ohanian declined to comment. A representative for Flav confirmed that he paid Fraley’s rent in full, although wouldn't reveal how much money was paid.

"THANK YOU & @FlavorFlav SO MUCH this makes every difference in the WORLD & I hope to represent team USA well this week," Fraley wrote to the pair.

On Aug. 2, Fraley shared an email confirmation on her Instagram story indicating her rent was taken care of.

“Rent is officially paid (in case anyone was wondering,” she wrote over the image.

She also posted on X, "Also paid my rent this morning."

Flav was only too happy to lend a hand.

"This the power of community... my girl @vmfraley had 7000 people see her tweet, only 41 people “liked” it, only 5 people commented, only 1 tagged me and @alexisohanian," he wrote on X.

"Now that tweet been seen by 10 MILLION people, her rent paid off for the year, and people gots her back!"

"Now she can focus on getting that hardware!" Ohanian replied to Flav.

Fraley has put together a GoFundMe page seeking financial help as she seeks to continue her track and field career beyond the Summer Games in Paris.

“My name is Veronica Fraley, I am a 2024 Paris Olympian and 2x World Championship qualifier in the women’s discus,” she writes on it.

“As I work to make the 2025 World Championships in Japan, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, you can support my track and field journey as I start my professional athletic career and continue to represent team USA!”

Fraley also confirmed that she is not angry with Vanderbilt, but rather the way the system is set up.

“Thanks for the supporting messages but I want to clarify my irritation isn’t with the school itself, mainly the rules that bar me from making the amount I’m WORTH as a collegiate athlete such as NIL which favors popularity over performance. that’s all I’m sayin. Wish me luck tm!” she wrote on X.

“NIL” refers to “name, image and likeness,” which allows college athletes to receive financial compensation in exchange for using their names, images and likenesses.

Flav’s action helping Fraley only adds to his profile in connection with these Summer Olympics. Prior to the Games, he signed a five-year sponsorship deal to become the official hype man for the U.S. women’s and men’s water polo national teams after he learned about the team's financial hardships. As part of the agreement, Flav donates money and will attend team events, including those at the Olympics.

The rap legend, who is known for wearing large clocks around his neck, also received a clock necklace made by Lulu Conner, the sister-in-law of U.S. women’s water polo star Maggie Steffens. Conner died July 23 after arriving in Paris to cheer on the team.

“Imma be wearing a VERY SPECIAL second clock for the duration of the Olympics and beyond,,, MADE WITH LOVE BY ARTIST LULU CONNER,” he captioned an Instagram video of him July 28 receiving the necklace.
