Olivia Munn Reveals She ‘Barely Knew’ John Mulaney When She Became Pregnant
Olivia Munn confesses that her relationship with John Mulaney developed in an unexpected way.
The couple spoke to GQ for Mulaney’s 2024 Men of the Year issue about their unconventional journey to parenthood and becoming a couple along the way.
They met only once at Seth Meyers’ wedding in 2013 before reconnecting shortly after Mulaney’s rehab stint in early 2021.
At the time, the 42-year-old Saturday Night Live alum was looking for a new apartment in New York City after calling it quits with his ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler. Munn referred him to a friend who could help, and exchanged a few messages. But Munn insists there was no romantic connection at that point in time.
“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’ ” Munn, 44, told GQ. “I barely knew him.”
When Munn found out she was pregnant, she assumed they would co-parent without necessarily becoming a couple. However, Mulaney showed he was eager to be part of the child’s life.
“It wasn’t necessarily ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that, but it was ‘I will be involved in some way,’” Munn added.
Despite Munn living in Los Angeles while Mulaney was in New York City, they would talk periodically and come visit her. Munn then became more involved with the comedian’s post-rehab recovery progress about six months into her pregnancy with a mini-intervention. The two agreed she would administer random drug tests for him—a ritual they continue to this day.
“It’s like a relief,” Mulaney said. “I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
“It was like watching a man in a tsunami,” said Munn of her now-husband’s post-rehab period. “I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”
Despite his fears of relapsing, the actress says he was most excited about fatherhood. “That’s the one thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents,” she said.
Just two months before he was born, they eventually decided to raise their child as a couple. Their son, Malcolm, was born on Nov. 24, 2021.
The couple tied the knot three years later during a “simple” and “intimate” wedding ceremony held at a friend’s residence in New York state. Their vows came months after sharing her battle with breast cancer .
They also welcomed daughter Méi in September via a surrogate.
