OJ Simpson was just honored at the BET Awards and folks had opinions: ‘Inappropriate’

All these legends were included during Sunday night’s BET Awards “In Memoriam,” honoring Black celebrities who died in 2024.

In a clip shared by TMZ, actress Tia Mowry introduces the segment, saying the people featured were being celebrated thanks to their “contributions to the culture.”

After each individual is shown on screen, the audience politely applauds. But suddenly, after O.J. Simpson, credited as “former NFL player,” appears, you can hear gasps, nervous laughter and murmuring.

Simpson, who died in April of prostate cancer at age 76 in Nevada, was acquitted of the 1994 double murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ronald Goldman in the so called Trial of the Century. The former Kendall resident was later found liable for their deaths in civil court.

The Goldman and Brown families — who are still reportedly owed millions by Simpson’s estate — were not happy about BET’s montage.

“I thought it was just wrong,” Ronald Goldman’s father Fred Goldman told NBC News. “It’s hard to imagine that he would fall in the same category as the vast majority of other people they honor.”

Brown’s sister Tanya agreed, telling TMZ that the recognition was “inappropriate.”

“Whoever thought of doing that owes every domestic violence victim an apology.”
