New 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' trailer picks up the pieces from 'Avengers: Endgame'

Peter Parker’s post-Snapture resurrection was probably the worst kept secret in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, Tom Holland was already shooting Spider-Man: Far From Home — the globetrotting sequel to the 2017 hit, Spider-Man: Homecoming — even as his wall-crawling alter ego turned to dust in Avengers: Infinity War.

But the lack of shock value didn’t make Peter and his mentor Tony Stark’s reunion in the climactic battle of Avengers: Endgame any less satisfying ... even if it ended with a farewell that’s definitely permanent. That’s a major spoiler that’s alluded to in the latest Far From Home, which hit the web with a special spoiler warning from webmaster Holland aimed at all those slowpokes who hadn’t seen Endgame yet. Tony’s death changes the MCU’s status quo in a big way and haunts this trailer from the opening, where Peter laments, “Everywhere I go, I see his face,” to the closing moments, where he says, “The world needs the next Iron Man.”

But there’s an even more significant change wrought by the events of Endgame: the film jumped forward five years in the MCU’s timeline to the not-so-distant future of 2023. Peter missed out on that five-year gap, as did his best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon) — which was confirmed when the two met again in the closing scenes of Endgame. Those missing years will factor into the plot of Far From Home in some way, especially as Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige has already said that this film — and not Endgame — is the true end to Phase 3 of the MCU.

Besides tying up loose ends from Endgame, the new Far From Home trailer also provides more intel on what Peter will find when he journeys over to Europe with his schoolmates, including Ned and M.J. (Zendaya), whose Snapture status notably wasn’t revealed in either Avengers movie. Oh yeah: and M.J. has totally cracked the secret of Peter’s alter ego—not that it’s all that hard, to be honest.

There’s also more Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck, whose alter ego Mysterio, the master of illusion, is going to factor into the story as one of Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) new superhero recruits, and Peter’s new life, in a big, big way. “I could have used someone like you on my world,” Beck tells Peter when they meet for the first time. But he’s not talking about a world in a far, far away galaxy. As Fury explains it, Mysterio hails from an alternate Earth, one that was snapped into being by the Snapture, which opened up a rift to a multiverse of Marvel characters. Of course, because things are rarely what they seem when Mysterio is around, it remains an open questions whether the multiverse is real...or another illusion.
