Neve Campbell's 2 Children: All About Caspian and Raynor
The ‘Scream’ actress shares two sons, Caspian and Raynor, with her partner, JJ Feild
Neve Campbell loves being a mother to her kids Caspian and Raynor.
The Scream actress welcomed her first son, Caspian, with her partner, actor JJ Feild, in 2012 and grew her family with the addition of Raynor in 2018.
In May 2024, Neve opened up to PEOPLE about how having her two children changed her life for the better. She admitted the best part about entering her 50s was “being present, looking for fun and new experiences and enjoying time with my kids.”
“When you have kids, everything else falls away, which is wonderful,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s something greater than yourself.”
After giving birth to Caspian, Neve and JJ quietly adopted Raynor. As he’s grown up, Neve revealed on The Kelly Clarkson Show in January 2022 that she’s prioritized being honest with her second child about his adoption.
“Really the guidance that I had was even before they understand the language, talk about their birth mother, talk about their story. Tell them who they are,” Neve said.
Neve admitted she has mixed feelings about her sons pursuing careers in acting like she and JJ. She told PEOPLE in June 2024 that she’d advise Caspian and Raynor not to become actors because it’s what their mother and father do, but because they want to.
“Unless you really feel that you have to do it, that your soul cannot live without the arts, without creativity, without storytelling, then find something else,” she said.
From coming up with her sons' unique names to the brothers' close bond, here’s everything to know about Neve Campbell’s two children, Caspian and Raynor.
Caspian, 12
Neve began dating her partner JJ in 2011, and she gave birth to their first son, Caspian, roughly one year later in August 2012. In a July 2018 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Glass Man actress revealed she was in labor for eight days before she went to the hospital to have Caspian.
Before her extensive labor process, Neve and JJ decided not to find out the sex of their baby, even though she said she “just knew” and had “an instinct” that Caspian was a boy. Instead, they brainstormed a list of “five boy names and five girl names” during her pregnancy — but those quickly flew out the window.
“I should have gone to the hospital sooner, it was really silly,” Neve said on the show. “Anyway, got to the hospital and then, after the nine days, we’d forgotten to bring the list, and it was the only name we could remember.”
She added that she also wanted her son to have a unique name like she did and was inspired by both the Caspian Sea and C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Before she became an actress, Neve attended Canada’s National Ballet School from the ages of 9 to 14. To her surprise, Caspian expressed interest in ballet at a young age without even knowing Neve used to dance herself.
“Caspian, earlier on, had asked about ballet, as well, not even knowing that I had been a ballet dancer," she said. “We did try, just for a minute, when we were in New York City, but it just took one bad teacher. It was like one teacher who was grumpy that day…”
Before he expressed a liking toward dance, Neve had originally thought she would never let her children try out the sport. However, she softened her stance once Caspian asked her about attending a class.
“Inevitably, if someone has a passion for something and they are driven to do it, and they have to do it, you can't stop them,” she told PEOPLE.
Though he may not have known his mother was a dancer, Caspian did discover in a "weird" moment that she was an actress when he was 7 years old.
Since the majority of her projects are in the horror genre, it wasn't a surprise that her two sons had yet to see any of her work. However, after one of the kids' parents at Caspian's school told him that his mom was famous, Neve decided it was time to explain.
"I didn't tell him for a very, very long time," she told PEOPLE in May 2020. "He came home from school and said to me, 'Mommy, are you Neve Campbell?' It was a very strange conversation."
"I'm like, 'Okay, let's talk.' I didn't really want it to influence him in any way," she added.
Raynor, 6
Neve and JJ adopted their second son, Raynor, in 2018. They opted to keep the adoption private “until it was official,” at which point they announced on Instagram in June 2018 that they had adopted Raynor five months prior. Neve shared a heartfelt picture of her new family of four from behind, pushing a stroller that held Raynor.
“His name is Raynor and we are madly in love with him,” the Scream actress wrote in the caption. “We’re so grateful for this beautiful light coming into our lives and we think of and are grateful to his birth family every day for such an incredible gift.”
Neve revealed on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022 that she and JJ were open with Raynor about welcoming him via adoption “from the beginning.” They felt it was important to be honest with their child instead of hiding that part of his life from him. Even at his young age, Neve said his adoption is “no surprise for Raynor in any sense whatsoever.”
“I read a lot about it. I think back in the day we used to think, 'Keep it from them and throw it at them when they're 21 so their entire reality falls apart,' which makes so much sense,” she said sarcastically.
Before his birth, she asked Raynor’s birth mother to compile photos or a letter about herself, and she responded by making “an entire album for him of photos of herself and things about her life and things that she likes.” Neve added she felt it was crucial for her son to have these materials in order to establish a connection with his birth mother. “He feels this relationship to her and I think it's really important, 'cause they're gonna need that,” she added.
While she brainstormed Raynor’s name, Neve said on Live with Kelly and Ryan in July 2018 that she wanted to choose a moniker that paired well with her first son, Caspian.
“We weren't going to call him Bob, because you can’t have Caspian and Bob,” she joked. Neve and JJ settled on the name Raynor because of its meaning, which is “warrior of judgment or someone who trusts good judgment, and I like that idea for him,” Neve added.
After Raynor was born, Caspian settled into his role as a big brother well, always wanting to spend time with the baby, Neve told hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.
“He’s not competitive,” Neve said of Caspian. “He climbs into the crib with the baby in the morning and takes him out of his sleep suit and reads him books. He’s in love with him. It’s the cutest thing.”
Like his elder brother, Raynor has attended ballet class. However, unlike Caspian, Neve told PEOPLE in September 2023 that he “absolutely loves it.”
