Neil Young Hits the Road in ‘Coastal’ Documentary Directed by Daryl Hannah — Watch Trailer
Neil Young is back on the road, and this time, it’s for his all-outdoor, all-acoustic solo tour. Young’s wife, actress Daryl Hannah, directs documentary “Coastal” about their shared experience touring for 15 shows along the West Coast.
“Splash” and “Blade Runner” actress Hannah previously helmed 2018’s “PARADOX” starring Young. The Netflix film was her directorial debut. She later directed documentary “Mountaintop” about Young’s process with Crazy Horse making their first album in seven years, plus Grammy-nominated film “Barn” about Young recording his titular album. Now, Hannah is collaborating once more with Young for “Coastal,” which is billed as being a “cinéma verité, behind-the-scenes look” into Young’s artistry.

The official synopsis reads: “Take an intimate journey with maverick musician Neil Young in this personal, behind-the-scenes doc as he cruises the coast on his recent solo tour. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker and Young’s wife, Daryl Hannah, ‘Coastal’ offers a glimpse behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast, as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid – from his everyday observations on his silver eagle tour bus to his candid, wry banter with his audience. The illuminating film also features songs rarely, if ever played live, performed in breathtakingly beautiful theaters.”
“Coastal” premiered at the 2024 Woodstock Film Festival 2024 and later screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
The documentary is produced by Gary Ward and edited by Rachel Simmer, with cinematography by Adam CK Vollick and director Hannah. Young will be releasing “Coastal: The Soundtrack” to accompany the film. The album is a live recording and companion piece for the documentary. “Coastal” is a Shakey Pictures (co-founded by Young and Larry Johnson), Trafalgar Releasing, and Warner Records production.
“With ‘Coastal’ I wanted to highlight Neil’s authenticity, openness and vulnerability as a person, musician and performer,” Hannah said in a statement. “He is as pure and honest as they come. Deeply devoted to his musical muse, which at times presented a challenge in capturing the songs, as we never knew what he might play or what instruments he’d pick up next. But what we were able to capture has an unpretentious magic that reveals the truth, sentiment and emotions in these hidden gems as well as a close up look at a performer who plays from the heart with a total lack of pretense.”
“Coastal” premieres in theaters for one night only on April 17 from Trafalgar Releasing. Get tickets here. Check out the trailer below.
