The groundbreaking dramedy starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd as bickering private detectives David Addison and Maddie Hayes, who solved crimes while fighting a strong attraction to each other. Allyce Beasley costarred as the agency’s receptionist Agnes DiPesto, with Curtis Armstrong as temp-turned-junior detective Herbert Viola. The series ran from 1985 to 1989 on ABC, becoming a buzzy hit with a trailblazing mix of comedy and drama, along with elaborate fantasy sequences and meta jokes that broke the fourth wall.

Despite its popularity and influence, though, Moonlighting had previously not been available on any streaming service due to complicated music licensing issues. In April 2022, series creator Glenn Gordon Caron told The Wrap that Disney execs informed him that “the big problem… is the show is just larded with music. None of those rights have been sewn up,” and the studio believes “it would be cost prohibitive to go get them now.”

Six months later, Caron announced that “the business of getting all five seasons of Moonlighting starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd ready for streaming” had begun — and now here we are.
