Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Jordan Parsons Killed in Alleged Hit-and-Run

From the time he was a young boy growing up in North Dakota, Jordan Parsons had one dream: to become a successful mixed martial arts fighter.

He seemed to be well on his way. He had signed with the production company Bellator and had amassed a professional record of 11-2. He even had a marketable nickname: "Pretty Boy." He had a televised fight scheduled for later this month.

But his promising career came to an end on Sunday. While walking home from the gym, he was struck by a silver Range Rover at a Delray Beach intersection. Although police are unsure who had the right of way, Parsons was in the crosswalk. He was wearing headphones and may not have heard the vehicle approaching, police say.

Police say the driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident.

Doctors amputated his leg in an attempt to save his life, but on Wednesday night, Parsons died from his injuries. He was 25.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker said, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a dear member of the Bellator family, Jordan Parsons. Jordan was an exceptional athlete and a rising star in the sport. But more importantly, he was an exceptional young man.

"Jordan was hard-working, dedicated, intelligent, and a pleasure to be around. He represented all the reasons we love this sport. It is a terribly tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and teammates."

Police Search For Driver

Police are now searching for the driver who struck Parsons: They say they are looking for a 2012 or 2013 Silver Range Rover with damage to the left side. A damaged mirror was found at the scene.

"We are missing the crucial puzzle piece of finding the driver," Broward County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Dani Moschella told the Sun Sentinel. "Right now, we don't know exactly what happened that led to the crash. We urge the driver to contact us to give us his or her side of the story."
