Twitter is celebrating the new Miss USA
Miss North Carolina Cheslie Kryst was crowned Miss USA 2019 on Thursday night.
This year’s contestants were an accomplished group of women, including a full-time attorney licensed to practice in two states and represents prison inmates for free.
During the competition, she tackled questions about her thoughts on the Me Too and Times Up movements.
“I don't think these movements have gone too far. What me too and times up are about are making sure that we foster safe and inclusive workplaces in our country,” Kryst said. “As an attorney, that's exactly what I want to hear, and that's exactly what I want for this country. I think they're good movements.”
Miss Oklahoma Triana Browne was named second runner-up and Miss New Mexico Alejandra Gonzalez was named first runner-up. This year’s finalists were an especially diverse group of women, highlighted by Miss New Mexico’s speech about immigration.
“I think that there's so many people out there wanting the American dream, and my parents immigrated here from Monterrey, Mexico,” Gonzalez explained. “And I am their representation of their American dream.”
Kryst was crowned just days after Kaliegh Garris was named Miss Teen USA, and fans showed an outpouring of support for both women on Twitter.
