Michelle Trachtenberg, 'Gossip Girl' and 'Harriet the Spy' actress, dead at 39

Michelle Trachtenberg, a 2000s mainstay with memorable roles in "Gossip Girl," "Harriet the Spy" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," has died at 39.
The actress was found dead Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. in New York City, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department confirmed Wednesday to USA TODAY. Upon arriving at the luxury apartment building, officers found a 39-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive; EMS officials responded to the scene and found the actress dead.
Gary Mantoosh, a representative for Trachtenberg, confirmed her death "with great sadness" in a statement to USA TODAY Wednesday. "The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time."
The New York City native and longtime working actress, who started her career at 3 in television commercials, rose to fame as a child star and later found success in television and movie roles throughout the aughts and beyond.
Michelle Trachtenberg cause of death
The NYPD said no criminal involvement is suspected and the investigation is ongoing.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York City, where Trachtenberg was found dead early Wednesday, ruled both the cause and manner of death as undetermined, according to a statement shared Thursday with USA TODAY.
Undetermined can mean either that there was inadequate information to assess how a person died or that the information was conflicting, with equal amounts supporting or negating a specific "manner" of death, such as suicide, homicide or accident.
Trachtenberg's family declined an autopsy, and the medical examiner’s office honored that request, CNN and ABC news report. USA TODAY has reached out to Trachtenberg's rep for comment.

Trachtenberg's breakout Disney role came with 2005's "Ice Princess," a star-studded coming-of-age film that she led featuring Kim Catrall, Hayden Panettiere and Joan Cusack.
The movie helped elevate her already growing fame, which first kicked off with a recurring role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," as the sister of Sarah Michelle Gellar's title character Buffy.

Trachtenberg also made notable appearances in "Harriet the Spy" and the '90s Nickelodeon sitcom "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," which ran for three seasons on the family-focused network.
Her teen stardom came after years as a child actress, guest-spotting on shows like "Law & Order" and "All My Children."
Later, she became a fan favorite, playing Georgina Sparks on the CW series "Gossip Girl" opposite Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Kelly Rutherford, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen, Chace Crawford and Penn Badgley.

Trachtenberg frequently took to Instagram to update fans with selfies and photos from her more private life in recent years after largely receding from acting since starring on the "Gossip Girl" revival.
However, Trachtenberg did recently post with her rumored talent agent boyfriend Jay Cohen for Valentine's Day, writing, "Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who sits still long enough for me to paint his face."

Last year, the actress took to Instagram to push back against comments about her appearance after followers expressed concerns about her health based on recent photos.
"Fun fact. This is my face," Trachtenberg captioned a selfie. "Not malnutrition no problems. Why do you have (to) hate? Get a calendar." A day earlier, Trachtenberg shared a similar message and selfie while noting that she has "received several comments recently about my appearance," to which she replied, "I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters."
At the time, some of Trachtenberg's recent Instagram photos sparked comments claiming that she appears unwell, with numerous fans openly speculating about her health and urging her to see a doctor. The comments continued to pour in, even on the actress' newest posts insisting that she was healthy.
