On Sunday, Nov. 10 during a Fox Sports broadcast, Strahan was seen standing with his hands interlocked in front of him, instead of with his right hand over his heart, during the national anthem.
Some on social media called the gesture “disrespectful” towards members of the military, with some people going so far as to call for his firing from the network.
The Daily Mail claims that a reporter from the outlet approached Strahan outside of his home and asked for a comment on the situation. The outlet says that Strahan yelled “don’t come to my house” to the reporter, “grabbing the reporter’s phone.”
Fans have jumped to his defense, stating that Strahan’s actions during the national anthem were misunderstood. “Michael Strahan's dad served in the Army for 23 years. He grew up on a US Army base in Germany and has given a ton of money to veteran charities. He's standing quietly at attention. We need to stop getting so upset at every little thing,” said one X user.
Another agreed, writing, “he's being respectful. No need for outrage.”
On Nov. 11, Strahan shared a photo of his father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., on social media.
Strahan wrote a thank you to “all veterans and active service members,” sharing that “just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you.”
