How ‘SNL’ Led to Michael Bolton’s ‘Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special’
International singing superstar Michael Bolton is also the “undisputed king of Valentine’s Day,” so naturally he’s partnered with Netflix for a variety special called Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special. Though the real genesis for the project came back in 2011, when Bolton and the Lonely Island collaborated on “Jack Sparrow,” an ode to Pirates of the Caribbean, for Saturday Night Live, and the Lonely Island’s album Turtleneck & Chain. (See the video below.) “People started asking when I was going to do some more comedy, and when I was going to work with the Lonely Island guys again,” explains Bolton. “So, one thing led to another.”

The special — which chronicles Bolton’s attempt to get the nation’s couples to make love — features a slew of celebrity guests (including Fred Armisen, Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph, and Michael Sheen), as well as new music designed to get you in the mood. And according to exec producer Akiva Schaffer, Bolton really brought the heat on set: “We had to keep replacing the ACs, because it would just get so hot in the studio from him.” Sounds about right.
Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day Special is streaming now on Netflix.
