Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — best friends, frequent producing partners, and occasional costars — are collaborating as producers and stars on a new movie for Netflix, the crime thriller RIP, primed for a fall premiere on the streamer. Affleck announced the film during a preview event Wednesday in the courtyard of the Netflix-owned Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, RIP is described in the Netflix logline as follows: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”
Affleck told those gathered at the Egyptian — part of a preview of Netflix’s ambitious upcoming slate of original films, series, documentaries, and games — that RIP “is not a horror movie. A ‘rip’ is when cops keep whatever money they find at a crime scene, and this movie takes a look at the things people will do for money. … When I talked to Joe Carnahan, he said this is going to be like Heat meets Narc meets Training Day. So I said, ‘Kinda like The Town.‘”
Affleck, who revealed the film recently wrapped filming, said that Carnahan “really outdid himself and it’s really spectacular. … He really wanted to make this a genre classic like Se7en or The French Connection — a really fun, engaging ride that keeps you guessing.” Besides Damon and Affleck, the cast includes Emmy winners Steven Yeun (Beef), Nestor Carbonell (Shōgun) and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) along with Catalina Sandino Moreno, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Lina Esco, and Scott Adkins.
It’s the seventh movie that Affleck and Damon have made through the duo’s production company, Artists Equity. “In a lot of ways,” Affleck maintains, “[RIP] is the most important one for us because we’ve found some really exciting partners who are really interested in not just what has been but what could be at Netflix.”
Affleck then premiered a clip from the film in which the police officer characters played by Damon, Affleck, and Taylor break into a home they believe to be part of a drug ring. After their money-sniffing dogs track down barrels full of cash, they wrestle with their collective conscience over whether to turn in the money or keep it for themselves.
Damon and Affleck won an Oscar together in 1998 for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. The last movie they worked on and starred in was Air in 2023, which Affleck directed.
